  1. First To TimothyA.D. 62-63 (1 Timothy 1:1-2) Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (RSV)

  2. Paul’s Relationship To Timothy • (Philippians 2:19-24) I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may be cheered by news of you. I have no one like him, who will be genuinely anxious for your welfare. They all look after their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But Timothy's worth you know, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me; and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself shall come also. (RSV)

  3. Timothy, The Young Evangelist • (2 Timothy 1:5) I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you. (RSV) • (2 Timothy 3:14-15) But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (RSV) • (2 Timothy 4:2) preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. (RSV)

  4. Messages In 1st Timothy • Warnings Against Departures From The Faith. (1 Timothy 1:3,4; 4:1; 6:3-5) • Proper Behavior In The House Of God. (3:15; 2:1-8; 9-15) • How To Save Ourselves And Those Who Hear Us. (4:16)

  5. Instructions, Warnings, & Exhortations 1 Timothy 4 Worthy Goals For Every Child of God!

  6. Caution About Religious Error • 1But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,3 men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; 5 for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer. (I Timothy 4:1-5, NASB) • The Spirit uses language that is simple, clear, plain, and easy to understand; and it is definite, precise, and certain. • As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith; (1 Timothy 1:3-4 RSV) • Acts 20:28-31 • Religious Error enslaves and condemns: 2 Thess. 2:10-12

  7. Encouragement To Exercise… • In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following. 7 But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; 8for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9 It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. 10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. 11 Prescribe and teach these things. (1 Timothy 4:6-11, NASB) • Bodily Exercise • Body belongs to God (1 Cor. 6:19,20) • Must be faithful stewards. • Value in physical exercise. • Aid to digestion, improves circulation, eases tension, prolongs life. • Spiritual Exercise • Promise of Life Now! • 1 Timothy 6:19; 2 Tim. 1:1 • Promise of Eternal Life! • 1 Timothy 6:12

  8. The Process of Godly Exercise • “Knee Bends” in prayer (1 Tim. 2:1,2) • “Walking” (Ephesians 4:1,2) • “Run” with endurance (Heb 12:1,2) • Discipline (1 Cor. 9:24-27) • Study (1 Tim. 4:13) • Teaching (1 Tim. 4:13) • Self-control (1 Tim. 4:16)

  9. Be An Example… • 12 Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. 13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. 15Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. (1 Timothy 4:11-15, NASB) • Worship Assemblies • Attendance (Heb. 10:25) • Conduct • Participation • In the Home (Eph. 6:1-4) • Respect for parents, brothers & sisters • Cooperation • Gratitude • In the School • Respect for others • Honesty • Courage to stand for Christ • In Work (Col. 3:23) • Diligent • Cooperative • In Recreation • Purity of life • Time used wisely. (Eph. 5:16)

  10. Four Ways Timothy Could Improve Himself: • Give attention to reading, exhortation, and to doctrine. • Do not neglect the gift that is in you. • Meditate on these things. • Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.

  11. Exercise Spiritual Care • Take heed to yourself and to your teaching; hold to that, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:16 RSV) • Importance of Taking Heed: • Faith may be shipwrecked (1 Tim. 1:19,20) • People may depart from “the faith” (1 Tim. 4:1) • Faith may be overthrown (2 Tim. 2:16-19) • Take Heed: • To Self • To Doctrine / Teaching
