Acids & Bases in Solution

  • An acid produces hydrogen ions in water.
    • H+
      • The hydrogen ion is the KEY in chemical reactions
  • A base produces hydroxide ions in water
    • OH-

Do you see what the chemical formulas have in common for Acids and bases?

Input & Modeling

Strength of Acids & Bases

Strength is based on how many ions are formed.

  • Strong acids and weak acids act differently in water.
  • Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid. Acetic acid is a weak acid.
  • Ammonia is a weak base and Lye is a strong base

ALL are broken up into ions in a STRONG solution

Another word for base is Alkaline

The pH Scale

  • A low pH indicates that the concentration of hydrogen ions is big (meaning acidic). In contrast, a high pH indicates that the concentration of hydrogen ions is low.
  • pH scale is from 0-14- the lower the number the more acid it is
    • Below 7= acidic
    • Above 7= basic

You use indicators (litmus paper or other) to test pH

Neutral Solution

  • If the pH is 7, the solution is neutral. This means that it is neither an acid nor a base.
  • Pure water has a pH of 7.
  • If you combine an acid and a base, a neutral solution will be formed.
  • Just because a solution has low acidity does not mean it is diluted.

Acid-Base Reactions

  • In a neutralization reaction, an acid reacts with a base to produce a salt and water.
  • SALT- is any positive ion formed from mixing an acid and base
