  1. Pre-Algebra August 23, 2011 Please get ready for class by getting your agenda and class materials out. Write the following in your agenda: Topic:Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Learning Objective: Students will express fractions and decimals as percents and percents as fractions and decimals when comparing and ordering the numbers

  2. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Essential Question: What is the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents?

  3. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents • Work in groups of three. • Each group member will choose decimals, fractions, or percents. • One group member will name an amount of their type; for example, the percent group member could say “80%”. The other two group members need to convert 80% to their type (i.e. decimal is .8 and fraction is ) • Group members will take turns naming an amount for their type.

  4. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Who remembers what “percent” means? Percents means “per hundred”

  5. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  6. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  7. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Knowing the relationship between fractions and decimals, how would a fraction be written as a percent?

  8. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Fraction to Percent • Write it as a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. • Write the decimal as a percent by dividing by 100 and removing the percent symbol.

  9. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  10. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  11. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Write each decimal or fraction as a percent. 1) 0.8 2) 0.564 3) 4)

  12. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals, and Percents To compare fractions, decimals, and percents it is easier to write all the numbers as percents or decimals. (Hint: decimals are the easiest!)

  13. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  14. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  15. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  16. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Skill and concept check: Complete questions 1-3 in your handout independently. When finished, compare your answer with your partner.

  17. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents 1) Write a fraction, a percent, and a decimal to represent the shaded portion of the rectangle at right. fraction _____________ percent ____52%______ decimal ___.52________

  18. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents • Kristen and Ashley are changing 0.7 to a percent. Who is correct and explain why. Kristen says 0.7 would be written as 7% Ashley says 0.7 would be written as 70% Ashley is correct. The decimal point is moved to the right two decimal places to write as a percent.

  19. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents

  20. Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals and Percents Closure Explain the relationship between fractions, decimals and percents. Fractions, decimals and percents are different ways to write the same number and can be used interchangeably.

  21. TOTD Work with a partner. Pretend your partner was absent for this lesson. On a piece of paper, write a percent and a decimal using different numbers. Teach your partner how to write a percent as a decimal and how to write a decimal as a percent. Explain and show how to place the decimal point. Paper will be given to Mrs. Klavers upon leaving the room. Good job!!!!
