  1. Undergraduate Explorationof Nano-Science Michigan Technological University NSF-NUE Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education

  2. Goals for Workshop 1 • Gain some perspective & vision of different aspects of nanoscale science & technology and societal implications • See where we can contribute to the educational plan of the proposal • Gain perspective on timeline of activities • Start developing collaborations & contacts • Start developing course materials!

  3. RFP Guidelines • 1 year • $100,000 limit • Interdisciplinary • Integrate nanoscale science and technology into curricula • Include societal implications of nanoscale science and technology

  4. RFP Guidelines (cont) • Develop and disseminate new modules for existing STEM courses • Incorporate undergraduate research opportunities in nanoscale science and engineering • Focus on reaching first and second year students

  5. MTU NUE Approach • Multi-faceted approach that will introduce students to basic science of nanotechnology, its applications, and possible societal implications. “The overall idea, a sort of 'saturation' approach to including nano-science in all levels of engineering and non-engineering courses, is an admirable one”

  6. MTU Approach • Lots of participants in many disciplines Social Sciences Electrical & Computer Eng. Physics Materials Science & Eng. Mechanical Eng. Engineering Fundamentals Chemistry Civil Engineering Computer Science Center for Teaching, Learning & Faculty Development

  7. MTU Approach • Capitalize on existing infrastructure, research, curricula • Modules: 1st & 2nd year Chemistry & Physics • Modules, Problems, Explorations for Engineering Fundamentals • Nano-themed “Perspectives on Inquiry” sections (Fall: Caneba, Yap) • New 1 credit elective course: “Fundamentals of Nanoscale Science and Engineering” (team taught in Spring)

  8. MTU Approach • Nanotechnology Lecture Series (1 Fall; 4 Spring) • Modules for 2nd-year engineering courses • Introduction to Materials Science & Eng. • Integrated Design and Manufacturing • Enterprise Program • Existing Social Science course: “Science, Technology and Society” • Undergraduate research experiences

  9. MTU Approach • Independent Study courses • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki • Summer Youth Programs Reaching underrepresented groups • Web Site • Meetings & publications • Assessment
