  2. The unities were inventedby Aristotle (335 BCE) • They are used to define what is a proper tragedy and what is not • They are also known as: classical unities, Aristotelian unities and three unities Information

  3. The first unity is action • A play should have one main action that it follows, with no or few subplots • The play should have one main focus Unity One 

  4. The second unity is place • A play should cover a single physical space and should not attempt to compress geography, nor should the stage represent more than one place • A play should only have one setting Unity Two

  5. The third unity is time • The action in a play should take place over no more than 24 hours • Everything that needs to happen must be within the 24 hours Unity Three
