  1. Andre Salles Fermilab Office of Communication August 23, 2012 Communicating About Tritium

  2. History • In 2005, Fermilab began detecting low levels of tritium in Indian Creek for the first time. • We informed neighbors, employees, local officials and the public. • We dedicated a section of our website to tritium in Indian Creek, which we have regularly updated. Communicating About Tritium

  3. Preparing for the Future • Higher levels of tritium on site are a result of our higher-intensity beam, used in experiments such as MINOS. • As the lab transitions to more high-intensity beams in the coming years, more tritium is expected to be produced. • We wanted to be more transparent about the ways tritium leaves the site. Communicating About Tritium

  4. Communication Plan • We have developed a tritium communication plan that includes: • Talking with local officials in Batavia, Aurora, Warrenville and Naperville. • Getting feedback from the Community Advisory Board. • Rolling out new tritium web pages. • Updating the tritium fact sheet. • Announcing the new information with a Director’s Corner in Fermilab Today. Communicating About Tritium

  5. New Tritium Web Pages • The new tritium pages include information on: • Low levels of tritium in surface water. • Low levels of tritium in sanitary sewer water. • Disposing of tritium through atmospheric emission. • Disposing of tritium as solid waste. Communicating About Tritium

  6. Looking Ahead • Fermilab is committed to being open and transparent about tritium production and management. • We will continue to update our new tritium web pages regularly. • We will bring new information to the Community Advisory Board. • Our Tritium Working Group continues to seek ways to further mitigate tritium. Communicating About Tritium

  7. Your Turn • Questions for the Community Advisory Board: • Do you feel we’re going about this the right way? • Can you think of any other local officials/entities we should talk with? • Are the new web pages understandable and clear? • Please help us spread the word in the community.
