  2. PIER Project Goal The goal of the PIER project is to open dialogue between youth, caregivers and service providers in order to prevent youth from using illicit substances.

Community Capacity Building • Initiate meetings with key community partners • Promote the project through presentations and speaking engagements to community organizations and to individual schools • Maintain regular contact with existing community partners, through attendance at meetings, general forums, newsletter updates and community network opportunities

Q: What do you want caregivers to know? “Don’t freak out on us, that is the worst thing to do” -18 year old male, Oxford County “Don’t tell your kids that they’re screw ups just because they tried” -15 year old female, Elgin County gotta just listen and be there for the kid. Help them through with alternative activities instead of punishment. Punishment makes it worse and often gives kids reasons to explore farther with substances. - Male, Gr.12 Elgin County “I think it’s great to get parents involved; they need to know how to talk to us and not just nag at us” – 17 year old female, Oxford County

  7. Resources • Gather information about youth access to and knowledge of illicit substance prevention resources • Develop materials by youth to fill in gaps

Q: What type of resource do you think youth would prefer? “ Online…You can look it up on your phone now too, you can just whip out your phone and just look it up on the internet – 17 year old female, Oxford County “ TV shows…like Intervention…I actually kind of like watching those things cuz you get to see it from a different perspective, but you also learn stuff too, it’s cool, it’s sad though.” -15 year old female, Elgin County “I think if we had someone like you (PIER Prevention worker) that is willing to text and willing to go on facebook and everything it helps a lot better cuz like teachers and everything are no facebook none of this - 16 year old female, Elgin County “…not everybody does drugs so like when you have to sit through the assemblies it is really annoying because like if you don’t do them like you’re wasting your time having a lecture about something that you don’t do” -Female, youth Oxford County

Youth Leadership • Engagement of youth through successful best practices to provide training to youth re: communicating messages about illicit substances and the prevention of their use to other youth, youth champions and service providers • Support the youth leaders to develop communication plan to promote the project messages to children, youth and parents • Youth will participate in train the trainer sessions, lead focus groups, make presentations to youth, service providers and parents

I have a 28 and 24 and then I dropped down to my son who is going to be 13. I thought I had open communication with them as well and I just learnt , probably last year that my 24 year old had actually used some pretty hard drugs when she was around maybe 19 and I neeeeever had a clue, not a clue, nope. So I thought, I thought we were good but, not a clue, just shocked” -Female Caregiver, Oxford County “It is sad too because they are so young and you don’t want to take away their childhood and youth but the reality is you have to educate them young” –Female Caregiver, Oxford County “this really is great to get you thinking about how to communicate effectively with youth about the topic” – Coach, Elgin County
