If you receive an email that you think might be a scam, forward it to the FTC and it will be stored in a database that law enforcement agencies use to generate legal cases.

The IC3 is a partnership between the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, whose mission is to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop, and refer criminal complaints related to cyber crime.

In addition to the FTC, you can also file a complaint with your state Attorney General's office if you think you may be a victim of fraud. Your state Attorney General's office handles a wide range of complaints related to consumer protection.

Identity Theft

Place a "Fraud Alert" on your credit reports, and review those reports carefully. Notifying one of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies is sufficient.

Close any accounts that have been tampered with or established fraudulently

File a police report with local law enforcement officials. This is an essential step in claiming your rights

Report your theft to the Federal Trade Commission, online, by phone, or by mail.
