  1. Notes from December 18th, 2012

  2. Journal: Forgiving Holden? • “The Secret Goldfish”- page 1-2 • Holden’s secret- he doesn’t want to talk about his personal ambitions because he doesn’t think people care. • “If you really want to know” • “If you really want to hear about it” • “Life is a game.”- page 8 • Goal of the game: status and security (being cool and having money) • This is what is valued, so we want to do what we can to achieve it. • Holden’s slob language vs. “Literate” Holden • Wants to meet societal standard of language with peers and with adults. • Literate Holden is not accepted or at least, Holden doesn’t think it will be.

  3. Foil Characters What are “foil” characters? Two characters who contrast one another to such a degree that, when paired, exaggerate the qualities of the other. What does this have to do with Holden? Ackley and Stradlater illustrate Holden’s battle with himself and society. Ackley = Holden’s persona of a slob to everyone else • Holden gives everyone what they expect like Ackley does. Example??? Stradlater = Holden’s secret world • Like Stradlater’sslobbish qualities, Holden keeps his personal wishes in secrecy. Examples???

  4. Journal: Forgiving Holden? • Holden vs. Stradlater (Jane and Allie) • Decide whether you think Holden is justified in attacking Stradlater. Pick a quote to support your idea and center your argument around it. • Meet up with some people and share your thoughts. • Holden’s Secret/Private World is Invaded by Society (stradlater)- Stradlater uses his things, rejects his composition, and then worst of all, removes the kings from the back row and won’t let Holden in on it, “ ‘That’s a professional secret, buddy’” (44). • Stradlater’s “sex quality” is too much for Holden. He wants to PROTECT the innocent!!! See snowball scene… • Holden’s private world is useless, rejected, and has no control (impotent). Hence, “if you really want to hear about it…”

  5. Journal: Forgiving Holden? • How does Holden want to play the game? • Go back to Old Spencer (Page 8) • Alle’smit…baseball=game. • Creative and thoughtful way. • Allie’s Death and Holden’s Reaction to it • Self-mutilation- Holden feels guilty • Physical symbol of self-accusation…he did not protect Allie. Hence, his passion to protect Jane, to uphold innocence, and the wearing of the red hat.
