  1. “Down Is The Way Up” Exodus chapters 1-4

  2. “Then, a new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, came to power in Egypt…the Egyptians put slave drivers over them to crush their spirits with hard labor.” (Exodus 1:8,11)

  3. “After four generations your descendants will return here to this land…” (Genesis 15:16 NLT) • “When the time drew near for God to keep the promise he had made to Abraham…it was at this time that Moses was born…” (Acts 7:17,20)

  4. “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to find out how his fellow Israelites were being treated. He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his help and took revenge on the Egyptian by killing him.” (Acts 7:23-24 GNB)

  5. “When Moses heard this, he fled from Egypt and went to live in the land of Midian. There he had two sons. After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.” (Acts 7:29-30 GNB) • “One day while Moses was taking care of the sheep and goats of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, he led the flock across the desert and came to Sinai, the holy mountain. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him as a flame coming from the middle of a bush.” (Exodus 3:1-2 GNB)

  6. “Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead My people Israel out of Egypt.’ But Moses protested to God, ‘Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?’” (Exodus 3:10-11 NLT)

  7. “(Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on earth.)” (Numbers 12:3 GW) • “Even though the LORD is high above, he sees humble people close up, and he recognizes arrogant people from a distance.” (Psalms 138:6 GW)

  8. “The High and Lofty One lives forever, and his name is holy. This is what he says: I live in a high and holy place. But I am with those who are crushed and humble. I will renew the spirit of those who are humble and the courage of those who are crushed.” (Isaiah 57:15 GW)

  9. “The LORD says, ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house, then, could you build for me, what kind of place for me to live in? I myself created the whole universe! I am pleased with those who are humble and repentant, who fear me and obey me.’” (Isaiah 66:1-2 GNB)

  10. “The LORD would speak with Moses face-to-face, just as someone speaks with a friend.” (Exodus 33:11 GNB)

  11. “Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised!” (Matthew 5:5 GNB)

  12. Biblical humility is where the good of the others is placed over that of the individual. • The opposite of humility: • Attempts to better himself at the expense of others (money, power, honor) – pride, selfishness

  13. “Please forgive their sin; but if you won’t then remove my name from the book in which you have written the names of your people.” (Exodus 32:32)

  14. “But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23 GNB)

  15. “Do not let me hear of the wisdom of old men, but rather of their folly...The only wisdom we can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility: humility is endless.” • TS Eliot

  16. “It is Pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began...As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”  • C.S. Lewis

  17. “Then you will be like God, telling him what to say.” (Exodus 4:16 – GN) • “The LORD said, ‘I am going to make you like God to the king, and your brother Aaron will speak to him as your prophet.’” (Exodus 7:1 – GN)

  18. “You are love; You are wisdom; You are humility” • Saint Francis of Assisi

  19. “Then Moses said, ‘In the land you are about to occupy, people follow the advice of those who practice divination and look for omens, but the LORD your God does not allow you to do this. Instead, he will send you a prophet like me from among your own people, and you are to obey him. On the day that you were gathered at Mount Sinai, you begged not to hear the LORD speak again or to see his fiery presence any more, because you were afraid you would die. So the LORD said to me, 'They have made a wise request. I will send them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will tell him what to say, and he will tell the people everything I command.” (Deuteronomy 18:14-18 GNB)

  20. “I am meek and humble of heart.” (Matthew 11:29)

  21. “The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had: He always had the nature of God, but he did not think that by force he should try to remain equal with God. Instead of this, of his own free will he gave up all he had, and took the nature of a servant. He became like a human being and appeared in human likeness. He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death--- his death on the cross. For this reason God raised him to the highest place above and gave him the name that is greater than any other name.” (Philippians 2:5-9 GNB)

  22. “We are accustomed to thinking of the Father in terms of power. Yes, the Father is omnipotent, but the Father’s heart is meek and humble like the Savior’s. It is meek for in Him there is nothing brusque or abrupt, no violence, no fury, but only kindliness, goodness and affection. His heart is also humble…He attaches no importance to display or appearances. He prefers the poor means and is united to the voluntary abasement of His Son who took on our nature and suffering. We must learn to see the Father in this light.” – “Jesus, a Dialogue with the Savior” (anonymous Eastern Catholic monk)

  23. “God is Love” (1 John 4:8) • “Love is not arrogant or rude, Love does not insist on having its own way.” (1 Corinthians 13:4,5) • “love is not self-seeking…. • “love is not proud….

  24. Worship “A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshiping we are becoming.”  - Ralph Waldo Emerson

  25. What humility is not: • 1. Weakness • “Jesus and his disciples were at supper. The Devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, the thought of betraying Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God. So… • He rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist…” (John 13:2-5)

  26. "Nonviolence...does not mean meek submission to the will of the evil-doer, but it means pitting of one's whole soul against the will of the tyrant. Working under this law of our being, it is possible for a single individual to defy the whole might of an unjust empire to save his honor, his religion, his soul, and lay the foundation for that empire's fall or its regeneration...Nonviolence is like radium in its action. An infinitesimal quantity of it embedded in a malignant growth acts continuously, silently, and ceaselessly till it has transformed the whole mass of diseased tissue into a healthy one. Similarly, even a little of true nonviolence acts in a silent, subtle, unseen way and leavens the whole society.“ - Gandhi

  27. “Omnipotence is not to be understood as the power of unlimited coercion, but as the power of infinite persuasion, the invincible power of self-negating, self-sacrificial love.” - C.B. Caird

  28. What humility is not: • 2. Having a low opinion of oneself

  29. “Do your work, not for mere pay, but from a real desire to serve…And all of you must put on the apron of humility, to serve one another; for the scripture says, ‘God resists the proud, but shows favor to the humble.’” (1 Peter 5:2-5 – GN)

  30. “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” (Albert Schweitzer)

  31. “It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready when he comes. What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will then dress himself so he can serve them. He will have them take their places at the table. And he will come and wait on them.” (Luke 12:37 – NIRV)

  32. Moses at the burning bush • “Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian….The angel of GOD appeared to him in flames of fire blazing out of the middle of a bush. He looked. The bush was blazing away but it didn’t burn up. Moses said, ‘What's going on here? I can’t believe this! Amazing! Why doesn't the bush burn up?’ • GOD saw that he had stopped to look. God called to him from out of the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’ He said, ‘Yes? I'm right here!’ God said, ‘Don't come any closer. Remove your sandals from your feet. You’re standing on holy ground.’ Then he said, ‘I am the God of your father: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.’ Moses hid his face, afraid to look at God.” (Exodus 3:1-6 – The Message)

  33. Moses at the burning bush • “But Moses replied, ‘When I go to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your ancestors sent me to you, they will ask me, What is his name? So what can I tell them?’” God said, ‘I am who I am. You must tell them: 'The one who is called I AM has sent me to you. Tell the Israelites that I, the LORD, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, have sent you to them. This is my name forever; this is what all future generations are to call me.’” (Exodus 3:13-15 – GN)

  34. “And you will die in your sins if you do not believe that ‘I Am Who I Am’…When you lift up the Son of Man, you will know that ‘I Am Who I Am’…I am telling you the truth,’ Jesus replied. ‘Before Abraham was born, ‘I Am’. Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.” (John 8:24,28,58,59 – GN)

  35. “So Judas went to the garden, taking with him a group of Roman soldiers, and some Temple guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees; they were armed and carried lanterns and torches. Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward and asked them, ‘Who is it you are looking for?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they answered. ‘I am he,’ he said. Judas, the traitor, was standing there with them. When Jesus said to them, ‘I am he,’ they moved back and fell to the ground.” (John 18:3-6 GNB)

  36. “I want you to remember, my friends, what happened to our ancestors who followed Moses. They were all under the protection of the cloud, and all passed safely through the Red Sea. In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptized as followers of Moses. All ate the same spiritual bread and drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them; and that rock was Christ himself.” (1 Corinthians 10:1-4 – GN)

  37. God’s condescension • God • “I am a God who is everywhere and not in one place only. No one can hide where I cannot see them. Do you not know that I am everywhere in heaven and on earth?” (Jeremiah 23:23,24 - GN)

  38. Angel of the Lord • Hagar, Jacob, Moses, Gideon • Man of Nazareth • “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” (John 1:46 – GN) • Nothing • “The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them.” (John 15:13)
