  2. Summary of Lesson

  3. The Main Idea of the Lesson This lesson is about the water on Earth. It teaches you about how much salt water, fresh water, and groundwater is on Earth. Did you know that oceans cover about 70% of Earth’s surface, but we cannot drink that water because ocean water is too salty to drink, and if you do drink it you would get sick.

  4. Runoff Runoff: rainwater that flows over the land without sinking into the soil. As water moves across the land it carries with it salt and other minerals. The runoff carries the salt and other minerals with it and enters rivers and streams.

  5. Groundwater If you dig deep enough in anyplace in the ground even in the desert you will eventually reach groundwater. Groundwater: water that collects in spaces and cracks in rocks and soil underground.

  6. Desalination Desalination: the removal of salt from salt water to make fresh water. Desalination plants operate all over the world, especially in • coastal lands that get little rain but unfortunately it has some drawbacks.

  7. drawbacks: Factories cost a lot of money This process produces brine which is not good for the environment. Theses are some drawbacks of Desalination from the first slide.

  8. Beyond the Book

  9. There is 97% of salt water on our Earth. This salt water isn’t safe to drink for us humans. The salt in the ocean water can be removed but it is hard, takes time, and costs a lot of money. There is now only 3% of water for us to use unfortunately 2% of this fresh water Is un the north and south poles stuck in the glaciers. And there is only 1% of fresh water to use.

  10. As Zaina was saying in the first beyond the book slide, there is only 1% fresh water for us to use and the other 2% of water is locked up in glaciers. You might think that we can just melt the glaciers but it is to far away for people to use. That leaves us with only 1%, and with this small amount of 1% we use it for toilets, clean the dishes , wash our cloths, and much more.
