  7. Outcome • Reagan and Gorbachev agreed to have their countries work in space together in 1975. • Apollo-Soyuz set the stage for later collaborations in space, including the International Space Station

  8. Over View • U.S. and Soviet Union entered the Cold War with a game of spying. This led to the space race. • Launching scientific satellites for space research (but really for spying). Soviet Union was winning with the first satellite in orbit until the U.S. sent Explorer 1 into orbit, which gathered scientific data. • Americans believed Eisenhower failed to recognize the importance of space research. This led to the formation of NASA and it was an effort to get ahead in the race. • The race to the moon. The U.S. behind with USSR having 1st man in space. United States NASA, Apollo 11 landed first man on the moon. • Ronald Reagan and Apollo-Soyuz set the stage for later collaborative space efforts. Officially ending the space race.
