  7. E-Club: Engineering research event Build Knowledge Web Searching • Keywords • Recent articles • Look at the URL • Wikipedia… good start (example about website refer to forum!!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capture_effect Some articles are posted but need reviews • Search Operators :Site: , filetype:, intitle: • Google Tools : [example: Google books]

  8. E-Club: Engineering research event When Building Your Knowledge • Read survey, journal and major papers on the subjects • Identify the names of groups, researchers, organizations working on the subject • Track their references  Classical papers are inspiring • Check their recent work • Check other recent work [good work example] • Teach yourself!!!

  9. E-Club: Engineering research event Working with Data Software tools • Matlab • Mathematica • MS Visual Studio • NS2, OPNET • Latex • Endnote Computing Resources • Virtual Lab • Supercomputing lab OSCER

  10. E-Club: Engineering research event Technical Problem…. Help Think about joining • Technical groups online • Mailing Lists • Usenets Examples: dsprelated.com opencores/.com codeproject.com vtk.org

  11. E-Club: Engineering research event Publishshshshshshs • When? Develop your own research personality!! [A side note on Tuesday research meeting] Conferences VS Journals Tip: Wherever you want to publish… read its previous articles

  12. E-Club: Engineering research event Publications - IEEE Journals • Transactions generally contain major manuscripts approximately 8 to 10 printed pages or 24 to 30 double-spaced pages. • Journals follow the same length criteria as Transactions, but often are focused on selected topics and more specialized areas of interest. • Letters are generally short papers of approximately three to four printed pages or nine double-spaced pages. • Magazines ... It depends. Source: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/11640731/IEEE-Transactions-Journals-and-Letters---IEEE---the-worlds

  13. E-Club: Engineering research event Journal Impact factor #articles published in the previous year were cited by indexed journals during current year ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # "citable items" published in previous year. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_factor • Example : Science magazine 2006 29.78 Source: http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=26&storycode=406557

  14. E-Club: Engineering research event Top 10 Journals in Telecommunications 1. Progress in Electromagnetics Research 2. IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications 3. IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing 4. IEEE Wireless Communications 5. IEEE Network 6. IEEE Communications Magazine 7. IEEE Pervasive Computing 8. IEEE-ACM Transactions on Networking 9. IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation 10. IEEE Transactions on Multimedia Source: http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/journmag/journalcitations.html#journals

  15. E-Club: Engineering research event Major IEEE Conferences • Globecom • ICC • CCNC • Infocom • Milcom • Dyspan Tips of good conferences • Quality of articles • Acceptance rate • Travel and best paper grant • Some selected articles are turned into journals

  16. E-Club: Engineering research event Peer reviewed • After the Editor/Editor-in-Chief of a publication determines that a paper is suitable for his/her publication, it will be forwarded to a group of reviewers selected for their expertise in a given field. • During this process, an author is often asked to expand, rewrite, or explain further the content of his/her paper. It is not uncommon that an author is asked to provide another draft with the suggested changes for further review. 17. E-Club: Engineering research event Good publication… get cited! • Useful conclusions • Limitations and boundaries • Optimization points • New Models • Better Solutions • Thorough Survey • Reproducible Research Study • Algorithm/Theory • Implementation Details • Available Data and Code Source: Vandewalle, P.; Kovacevic, J.; Vetterli, M., "Reproducible research in signal processing," Signal Processing Magazine, IEEE , vol.26, no.3, pp.37-47, May 2009

  18. E-Club: Engineering research event Books 1. Higham, Handbook of Writing for the Mathematical Sciences, 2nd ed., SIAM, 1998. This handbook is highly recommended and should be on the reference shelf of any research student. The book covers a handy set of rules and provides advice on technical writing. It also overviews the entire publication process, which is invaluable for anyone planing to publish in a technical journal. 2. Strunk and White, The Elements of Style, 4th ed., 2000. This little book is a classic and “should be the daily companion of anyone who writes.” It presents a concise set of rules and principles, together with examples, about English writing. Elements of Style is available on-line at http://www.bartleby.com/141.2 3. Zinsser, On Writing Well, Collins, 2006. Another classic guide for nonfiction writing. 4. Alley, The Craft of Scientific Writing, 3rd ed., Springer, 1996. This book offers excellent discussion and useful suggestions about how to bring your idea into strong writing. 5. Dupre, BUGS in Writing: A Guide to Debugging Your Prose, 2nd ed., Addison-Wesley Pub Co, 1998. Another good book that has writing advice and examples. 5.the craft of research

  19. E-Club: Engineering research event TIPS • A useful feature for is to signup for Table of Content Alerts at http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocalerts_signup.jsp to receive regular email notification of recently posted IEEE journals of your choice. • Aha moment notes : “Our short-term memory only can keep about 7 pieces of information at a time. So good insights, unless getting noted down, will be lost”.
