  1. Physical Education Summer 2007 Workshops Fitness Activities For Physical Education

  2. Why Physical Education? • Why do we do what we do? • What is our purpose? • What are our goals? • Am I valued? • Do I make a difference? • Is it all just about fun and games????

  3. Heredity Lifestyle Environment Personal Attributes A representative model describing the relationship among habitual physical activity, fitness, & health

  4. What’s the Connection? • Does Physical Activity Really Make a Difference in my Health?

  5. CHOICES!!! • Do the choices we make really impact our health and well-being? • Consequences of our choices. • What foods do you choose to eat? • How much sleep do you choose to get? • How much physical activity do you engage in? • We all have choices. What we do today, impacts tomorrow!

  6. So, What Has Changed??? • 1900’s – Average Life Expectancy in U.S. was 47 years old. • Causes of death – Acute diseases that were infectious, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, influenza, diphtheria, polio, and kidney diseases. • TODAY – Average life expectancy is 77.8 years old. • Causes of death – Chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer, strokes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, emphysema, and cirrhosis of the liver. THESE ARE DISEASES RELATED TO LIFESTYLE BEHAVIORS! CHOICES WE MAKE!

  7. We know this….. • Yet how do we get this message across to our students? • Can they understand this message at this point in their lives? • Can we help them to make the connection NOW? • Why is it important to make the connection NOW???

  8. So, where do I fit in the picture???? • While the factors contributing to these diseases are many, the fundamental determinants appear to be physical inactivity and poor nutrition. • Schools are the ideal setting for physical activity and nutrition education to take place. Since more than 95% of American youth ages 5-17 are enrolled in school, there is no other institution with as much continuous and intensive contact with children during their first two decades of life (Story, 1999). • According to the American Heart Association, (AHA) atherosclerosis begins in childhood and elevated cholesterol levels early in life may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis in adulthood. • American Heart Association Statement 2006 American Heart Association. (No Date). Children with hypercholesterolemia. Retrieved April 15, 2006, from http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=1250 Story, M. 10. So, after looking at the leading causes of death…. • Knowing that the leading causes of death are mostly preventable… • Caused predominately by choices individuals make…. What’s the Bottom Line Say???

  11. Country 1960 1970 1980 1990 1995 1998 1999 2000 20012002

  12. And the CDC says…..The problem will just keep getting worse. • http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/ Table 1. Prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents ages 2-19 years, for selected years 1963-65 through 1999-2002 http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/pubs/pubd/hestats/overweight/overwght_child_03.htm

  13. So, again, How can we help our students MAKE THE CONNECTION??? Is it that perhaps: the concept of developing cardio-or cerebro-vascular disease as an adolescent is too abstract for elementary, junior, and high school students? What about other chronic diseases, such as: osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and on and on and on….

  14. So, this brings us back to the beginning….. • Why do we do what we do? • What is our purpose? • What are our goals? • Am I valued? • Do I make a difference? • Is it all just about fun and games????

  15. What can I do in my every work-a-day world that can make the difference in the lives of my students? How can I help them to MAKE THE CONNECTION??? or
