  6. Jane Jacobs • Dark Age Ahead • (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 treatise, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail that now seem like common sense to generations of architects, planners, politicians and activists. 6 CCT205 Week #1: RT

  7. Expectations 7 CCT205 Week #1: RT

  8. Expectations continued… • Individual Assignment (January 26, 10%) Write a brief (2-3 page) personal narrative on a situation where you engaged in tactical responses to strategic power; submitted in hard copy, wiki posting optional. The goal of this assignment is to begin engaging with and critically thinking about the ways in which technologies affect culture. 8 CCT205 Week #1: RT

  9. Expectations continued… • Group Research Assignment (March 1, 15%) Group forms around common concern, conducts background research on social issues (approx. 2000 words), and outlines communication strategy (message, target demographics and media used); posted to course wiki for review. 9 CCT205 Week #1: RT

  10. Expectations continued… • Major Assignment (March 29, 20%) Presentation of final communications effort in lecture period, with documentation on course wiki. 10 CCT205 Week #1: RT

  11. Expectations continued… • In-class exercises (ongoing, 15%) You are expected to actively participate in activities during lectures. As a way to measure this, and to maintain engagement with course material, you will be required to submit 5 in-class exercises pertaining to the weekly topics. Each week, you will write a 300 word (minimum) critical response on the topic (or provided question) and publish it on your own Wikispaces site by midnight the following day (Friday). At the end of the semester, you must indicate the best 5 responses (in your own view) by marking them with three *’s (asterisks). Each of those 5 submissions will be worth 3% for a total of 15% of your final mark. Since this exercise will be ongoing throughout the year, no make-ups will be allowed. (Wikispaces timestamps work that is published.) 11 CCT205 Week #1: RT
