  3. The HIV virus is responsible for spread of pandemic disease “AIDS” • HIV is a great challenge to public health in modern times. • The infection is truly global in its magnitude & is unlikely to spare ay continent, nation, race or political system.

  4. HISTORY • Summer season – 1981 • Newyork and California • Sudden increase in incidence of 2 very rare diseases 1.Kaposi’s sarcoma2.Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in young homo sexuals and drug addicts. • Collapse of immune system and death due to opportunistic infections.

  5. LUC MONTAGNIER & HIS COLLEAGUES: 1983 – Pasteur Institute of Paris – Isolated a virus from a African patient suffering from PGL – “LAV”

  6. ROBERT GALLO & HIS COLLEAGUES: 1984 – National Institute of Health, USA – isolated a virus from an AIDS patient – HTLV –III

  7. ARV – AIDS Related Virus: common name given for the viruses discovered so far. Antigenically different but common origin.

  8. INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ON VIRUSNOMENCLATURE: 1986 – To avoid confusion a generic name “HIV” was coined

  9. Dr. SUNITY SOLMON: 1986 – Detected the first case of AIDS in Chennai.

  10. WORLD AIDS DAY: 1988 – The first worlds AIDS day was celiberated on 1st December. • RED RIBBON: Becomes an international symbol of AIDS awareness in 1991.

  11. SOME INTERESTING FACTS • Originated from monkeys and chimpanzees in Africa • CAMAROON in West Africa – mostly affected area • In India AP is one of the 6 “hard hit” states – Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Manipur & Nagaland

  12. In AP – East Godavari, Guntur, Warangal, Vishakhapatnam, Chittoor, Karnul • STD suffering patients are more prone to HIV infection • Males / Females ratio is 3:1 • 90% of total reported HIV cases are between 15-44 years

  13. Urban/Rural incidence: 20% Urban 30% Rural • Business class people are more prone, then unemployed, drivers, agriculturists and house wives. • TV – most likely source of HIV/AIDS knowledge, followed by friends or relatives.

  14. Mode of transmission: • 75% by hetero sexual contacts • 8% by Blood transfusion • 7% by injectable drug use • 2.4% by mother to child
