  1. Liverpool FC’s Iconic Shankly Gates are Back After Months in Storage A set of gates can make a huge impact on a premises; the iconic Shankly Gates at Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium are a perfect example. New Position After a substantial stadium redevelopment, the dramatic gates were repositioned at the Centenary Stand car park entrance of the ground, having held their position next to the Hillsborough Memorial since they were erected after the death of legendary manager Bill Shankly in 1981. Anfield opened for business again with a home game against Premier League champions Leicester on Saturday 10th September (2016), and club supporters were delighted to see the Shankly Gates once more after they had been placed in storage in February when work began on the redevelopment of the stadium. Honouring a Legend The Shankly Gates were officially unlocked by Nessie Shankly, Bill’s widow, in August 1982 to honour the legend. As further recognition and to show the gates’ importance, they were incorporated onto the club badge in 1992 to celebrate Liverpool’s centenary. It is not the first time a set of gates have been used to honour sporting legends. Lord’s cricket ground has the ‘W.G. Grace Gates’, which were erected to commemorate the legendary cricketer. Insofar as the Liverpool gates are concerned, it was Horace Yates who suggested that a set of gates be used to honour the man who brought so much success to Liverpool football club, when he said, “Why not name theirs the ‘W.
