  1. How to close Discovery Day Camp Instructions on how to close up the camp on a nightly basis for maintenance staff and camp directors.

  2. Closing Closing the camp is a multi-step process that is done nightly by the maintenance staff or camp directors. If you are closing, you should make sure the camp is cleaned, locked and hazard-less before leaving.

  3. Closing • Closing the camp involves three tasks: • Cleaning the camp • Locking up the camp • Checking the camp

  4. Cleaning • Cleaning the camp is important to make the appearance of the camp appealing. Before closing make sure there is no garbage/equipment left on the camp’s grounds. • Be sure to clean: • The climbing wall areas • The shelter • The pool

  5. Climbing Wall • The climbing wall can become hazardous if not checked on a nightly basis. When closing check for any cracked climbing-stubs, garbage around the wall or left out climbing equipment that could get ruined overnight. • If any of the climbing wall studs are chipped, broken or even questionable, report them to a director.

  6. Shelter • Cleaning: • The shelter must be swept, the tables must be wiped down and garbage must be cleaned on the outskirts of the shelter. • Arrangement: • The tables must be arranged in three rows of ten, with the garbage cans arranged in an adjacent fashion on every other table of the middle row. See the picture below.

  7. Pool • The pool: • Skim the pool if the surface water is dirty. Check to make sure no swimsuits garbage or equipment are left out by campers or staff. The umbrella stand needs to be closed and tied up before leaving. • The pool house: • Check to make sure the filler is off, the chlorine containers are closed and all of the equipment is arranged in a proper fashion.

  8. Locking • Lock each of the doors: • Lock the Art room door, the office, the kitchen, the dance room and the white house. • Maintenance uses the maintenance key ring or pool key ring, directors should use David’s set of keys. • Check that each of the sheds is locked: • The equipment shed, the climbing wall shed, the maintenance shed, and the storage shed.

  9. Eliminating Hazards/ Double Checking After you have closed up the camp make one more check around the entire camp to make sure that nothing was missed. Specifically look for hazardous thingssuch as broken equipment, sharp metals or maintenance equipment (tools, fluids)

  10. Checklist There will be a checklist to sign out on if you are closing the camp. This should be submitted along with your sign-out cards at the end of your shift.
