  1. Affiliate Study Task Force: A Report on Progress Presented at ASCD Leader to Leader July 24, 2010

  2. An Introduction ~ Affiliates are diverse. . . • Presently 58 affiliates in US, Canada, the Caribbean and Asia • Range in size from 50 to 2534 members • Range in revenue from $760 to $698,785 • Range in dues from $15 to $105 • Membership in ASCD does not include membership in an affiliate; legally separate organizations that work interdependently

  3. . . .the importance of affiliates. . . • ASCD looks to its affiliates for leadership and governance; Board of Directors and Leadership Council consist primarily of affiliate representatives with proportional and at-large members • Affiliates hold a critical role in ASCD leadership; one-third of ASCD’s policy-making body is comprised of members elected by LC • Affiliates, approximately 25% of ASCD members, have a leadership role greater than their numbers, making a strong, thriving affiliate program essential to ASCD’s overall strength as a membership organization

  4. Trends in Affiliates and ASCD • Overall membership declined • The proportion of ASCD members joining an Affiliate lessened • Revenues decreased, some with year-end deficits ~ Indication of need to study the Affiliate program ~

  5. The Creation of a Task Force The Affiliate Study Task Force was charged to: • Study ASCD’s current affiliate program and explore how to strengthen the effectiveness of affiliates and their role within ASCD; • Develop recommendations for the ASCD management for action and/or further study.

Designing the Affiliate of the Future • Connections To understand where we want to be, we ~ examined past practices ~ looked at how we currently function ~ imagined a future state for affiliates • From The Future of Governance article, we envision an organization that ~ operates flexibly ~ provides easy access to information ~ recreates itself based on member needs

  11. Assumptions #1. ASCD will have affiliates located worldwide, operating as legally separate organizations that communicate, network and collaborate with each other and with ASCD to advance ASCD’s mission and beliefs. #2. Affiliates will provide member engagement in advancing ASCD goals and vision in a local context. #3. Each affiliate will maximize its capacity to attain its goals through flexibility and adaptability, using trends, research, and data.

  12. An Overarching Goal Goal: moving affiliates from the current practices in which we function to a transformed future ___________________________________________________ Transactional Present to Transformational Future ____________________________________________________________ ~ Goals (Action Oriented) ~ Drivers of Change (Results Oriented) ~ Knowledge as power ~ Shared power through collective access to knowledge ~ Meetings ~ Flexible access using technology ~ Limited coordination or ~ Sharing and coordination between sharing of resources affiliates as a natural part of our work between affiliates ~ Responsibility to continue ~ Responsibility for innovative solutions current practices when to member needs no longer effective

  13. On becoming an Affiliate of the Future Next Steps • Acquire responses to the recommendations from members of the Task Force • Formalize the report: The Affiliate of the Future: Transaction to Transformation for ASCD management • ASCD studies recommendations; communicates with affiliates; develops implementation plan with affiliates.
