  5. Ethos (Ethical Appeal) Makes the audience believe the speaker is trustworthy. Presents a carefully crafted and edited argument Convinces the audience that the speaker is reliable and knowledgeable Demonstrates the speaker knows and respects his audience

  6. Pathos (Emotional Appeal) Uses emotionally charged words or examples Uses sensory description, euphemisms, and/or figurative language May include a human interest story, compelling anecdote, bias, or prejudice Develops a charged tone Often utilizes informal language

  7. Logos (Logical Appeal) Incorporates inductive and deductive reasoning (http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/itl/graphics/induc/ind-ded.html) Cites authorities, traditional culture, commonly held beliefs Uses facts Provides apt examples, research, or evidence Examines cause and effect

  9. It’s Your Turn Examine your advertisement and identify the primary appeal (ethos, pathos, or logos). Be prepared to present your ad to the class and explain and support your identification of the appeal.

  10. Ad Analysis Paragraph Examine your advertisement and determine the primary appeal In a typed paragraph (double spaced with a proper heading), support your identification of the primary appeal with specific analysis. Attach your ad to the paragraph and submit tomorrow

  11. My Expectations You will type all assignments (unless otherwise specified). You will include a formal heading in the top left corner. You will have assignments ready before class starts. You will not ask me to use my computer to print last-minute. If you have printer issues, email me the document BEFORE 7:45 a.m. If you attach it correctly and ask nicely, I will print it for you. 
