  1. Overview of the Project thus far Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry Joachim Schummer, Tom Børsen "Ethical Cases for Chemistry Education"Aalborg University, Copenhagen, Denmark, 16-17 June 2017

  2. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry Background National and international science organization recommend or require the implementation of ethics in science and engineering education, e.g. COMEST, European Chemistry Thematic Network, ... Funding agencies ask for complementary ethics components, e.g. Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in EC Horizon 2020. Many countries have already mandatory ethics courses for chemistry, e.g. Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Japan, Russia, .... Lack of teaching material. "Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry" Projectby Tom Børsen (Aalborg University, Copenhagen) and Joachim Schummer (HYLE). Develop a canonical set of cases, with differrent ethical topics and concepts, from different chemical fields - suitable for undergraduate teaching, available open access in HYLE.

  3. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry Four areas of cases • Intentional misuse and misconduct E.g., scientific misconduct, chemical weapons, drug abuse. • Unforeseen consequencesE.g., industrial pollutants, industrial disasters, adverse side-effects. • Global and long-term influences and challengesE.g., chemical prediction of environmental or health problems, geochemical engineering, green chemistry, global human and environmental challenges for chemistry, impact on global economy. • Impact on human cultureHow do chemical agendas affect cultural values, ethical principles, or religious ideas? E.g., patenting DNA, creation of life, human enhancement, chemical modernism.

  4. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry 1. Intentional misuse and misconduct Scientific Misconduct Janet D. Stemwedel (San José State University, U.S.A.): "The Case of the Finicky Reactions: A Case Study of Trust, Accountability, and Misconduct" Weapons research Stephen M. Contakes and Taylor Jashinsky (Westmont College, U.S.A.): "Ethical Responsibilities in Military-Related Work: The Case of Napalm"

  5. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry 2. Unforeseen Consequences Industrial desasters Ingrid Eckerman (Stockholm, Sweden): Corporate and Governmental Responsibilities for Preventing Chemical Disasters: Lessons from Bhopal Adverse effects of pharmaceuticals Klaus Ruthenberg (Coburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany): "About the Futile Dream of an Entirely Riskless and Fully Effective Remedy: Thalidomide" Adverse effects of industrial chemicals Abigail Martin, Alastair Iles and Christine Rosen (UC Berkeley, USA): "Applying Utilitarianism and Deontology in Managing Bisphenol-A Risks in the United States" Tom Børsen & Søren Nors Nielsen (Aalborg University, Copenhagen, Denmark): "Applying an Ethical Judgment Model to the case of DDT" Chemical waste deposal Ragnar Fjelland (University of Bergen, Norway): "When Laypeople are Right and Experts are Wrong: Lessons from Love Canal"

  6. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry 3. Global and Long-term Influences and Challenges Green Chemistry Alastair Iles, Abigail Martin, and Christine Meisner Rosen (UC Berkeley, USA): Undoing Chemical Industry Lock-ins: Polyvinyl Chloride and Green Chemistry Laura Maxim (CNRS, Paris, France): "Primum non nocere: Chemists’ responsibility for the health impacts of chemicals" Chemical regulation Jean-Pierre Llored (University of Paris 7, France): "Ethics and Chemical Regulation: The Case of REACH"

Impact on Human Culture Human Enhancement Klavs Birkholm (Tænketanken TechnoEthics, Denmark): "The Ethical Judgment: Chemical Psychotropics" Creation of Life Joachim Schummer (KIT, Germany): "'Are You Playing God?': Synthetic Biology and the Chemical Ambition to Create Artificial Life"

  8. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry Call for Further Case Studies • Chemical Geo-/Climate-Engineering (Paul Crutzen) • Molina/Rowland prediction of the Ozone Hole • Chemical desasters of Seveso, Sandoz, Minamata • Chemical weapons: poison gas in WW I • Patenting DNA • Codes of Conduct by Chemical Societies

  9. Ethical Case Studies of Chemistry Questions for Discussion • Which ethical cases of chemistry are missing? • How can the case studies be used in chemistry teaching? • Should we prepare case questions or other kinds of additional case material? • How to promote the use of the special issue on ethical case studies of chemistry • What ethical values, principles, norms and standards are particular important to chemistry? • How can students and professionals conduct ethical analyses related to own work? • Should a Danish / Nordic / European Society or Think tank for the Ethics of Chemistry be formed?
