Safe and productive out-of-classroom activities must be based upon a partnership between the provider, organisers and students.
Health and Safety • The Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits (HASPEV) document indicates that the School Group Leaders must remain responsible for the overall safety of their pupils. • Group Leaders should work in conjunction with the Learning Providers who are responsible for the safety of the activities.
Roles in the project • Learning Providers • School Group Leaders (Champions) • Parent Helpers • Pupils It is vital that everyone knows their roles and responsibilities so that the visits can be fun and safe.
Learning Providers • All Learning Providers will be risk assessed. • All vehicles will be well maintained and their journeys risk assessed. • All sites for fieldwork and other activities led by Learning Providers will be comprehensively risk assessed. • Staff will be capable of carrying out ongoing risk assessments. • All Learning Providers will have a satisfactory CRB Disclosure check.
School Group Leaders (Champions) • Risk assessing the journey to and from the Forest. • Ensuring any activities not led by Learning Provider staff are appropriately risk assessed. • Ensuring the appropriate behavior and effective pastoral care. • Ensuring that the Learning Provider is made aware of any known pupil or staff medical, dietary or health issues, or special educational needs. • Ensuring that other staff and parent helpers are clear in their roles.
Pupils • All pupils must follow Health & Safety instructions. • All pupils should behave with a concern for the safety of themselves and others. • All pupils (or their parents/guardians) should ensure that Group Leaders are made aware of any health, dietary or medical conditions prior to the course.
Parent Helpers • Dress appropriately, for the outdoors and bring all that you need for the day. • Understand that the day may be physically demanding, including activities such as travelling across uneven surfaces, or bending down to work with a group. • Support staff in ensuring that the health and safety procedures outlined are followed throughout the visit. • Support the staff in helping maintain good discipline and ensuring pupils are actively engaged during activities and that they understand what they are doing. • Follow the Learning Provider staff requests regarding positioning during activities and moving between sites to help maintain health and safety procedures and disciplinary expectations. • Ensure that any sub-group, for which supervisory responsibility is allocated, remains together and is supported effectively in the learning process.
