  3. Is these wash in schools ? Contaminated water through hand pump used for drinking purposes. Queue in hand pump for washing plates of MDM. Toilet is available but defang and inaccessible. Preservation of water and its house keeping is always an issue.

WASH in Schools Wash in schools – more than toilets……and Hand pumps • Access to adequate and safe water: • Drinking • Hand washing • Flushing or clean the toilet • Toilet facilities that are: • Separate for boys and Girls • As per technical norms and adequate in number • Child-­friendly, gender-­specific • Incinerator attached to girls’ toilet • Maintained with regular cleaning facility • Private, well located and maintained toilet facilities

Wash in schools – more than toilets……and Hand pumps • Personal hygiene materials (with easy access) • Water, soap, • Menstrual pads, nail-cutter, comb, bucket, mug, mirror etc. • Hygiene education • Curriculum, Maintenance Plan • Supplementary reading material, teachers and SMCs training on WASH, Washing of Hands with Soap as regular activity in school. • Child cabinet for day to day activities of WASH in schools. • Regular monitoring of wash activities by Child Cabinet. • GHD incorporated in State Educational Calendar • Convergence with school health programme.

Why wash in schools ? • Improved primary school attendance, health and cognitive development; • Greater girls’ participation in school; • Personal hygiene behaviours that may last for life; • Outreach to families and communities, through the participation of students in hygiene promotion; • Greater equity in schools

Why wash in schools ? • Diarrhoea reduction through improved sanitary facilities: 34 % • Washing hands with soap: diarrhoea reduction 50%, • respiratory infections reduction 25%, • number of school days lost reduced with 25-50%. • All cases (estimated 47%) of roundworm, whipworm and hookworm are caused by inadequate sanitation and hygiene.

  8. Why WASH in Schools ? Cont..... Girls’ participation in school • Lack of facilities for menstrual hygiene and management in existing sanitation facilities (places to change and wash) can mean absenteeism of up to 4-5 days a month. • Toilets need to be constructed on safe locations to avoid threat of abuse and violence (for girls and boys).

  14. Water What is the Water source in school? Hand pump/ Water tap /borehole /well/... Or no water point • Is it functional? • Is there enough water in the school?(5 lts per day per child for day school) • Is water treated or safe before drinking?(Water tested ever) • Are water facilities accessible for children including CWSN ?

  15. Sanitation Does the school have latrines and Urinals? • No. of seats exclus. for boys with Urinal • No. of seats exclus. for girls with Urinal • Is Soap and water available in toilets • Are all toilets have easy access for children including CWSN.

  16. Hygiene • Is the drinking water stored Hygienically ?(water source to mouth) • Does the school have HWWS facilities? If yes is it functional? • How many Toilet are functional/non-functional for girls/ boys. • Is sufficient soap along with water is available before MDM ? • Is hygiene taught in the school and training of Teachers and SMC conducted ?

WASH IN SCHOOLS- FUTURE PLAN • Provision for Repair and maintenance of defunct/ damaged toilets. • Design and construction of child friendly ,gender friendly school toilets in context of adequacy and WSDP. • Indicators on % of schools with functional hand washing facility with soap and % of students practicing hand washing included in DISE Data. • Guidelines on operation and maintenance and regular cleanliness of school toilets. • In very school Bal Cabinet formation to have active involvement of school children. • Operationalise the Clean School Award for maintaining and sustaining Wash facilities in schools. • Operationlise the resources from Panch Parmeshwar scheme for regular cleanliness of school toilets • Explore Regular adequate funding for sustainable wash facility in schools. • Installation of Hand washing station in every school for washing of hand with soap.
