  1. Colonial Day

  2. Preparations • Send a letter home a month before, requesting donations and volunteers. • As the supplies arrive sort them into each craft box. • Students need a small journal and a bag for their crafts. • Show the Colonial Power Point to refresh their memory of the settlement of America. • They should write Thank you cards.

  3. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS • 9:00 – 10:00 Guest Presenter • 10:00 – 10:45 First class plays with toys • 10:00 – 10:45 Second class does crafts • Break Snacks • 11:00 – 11:45 Second class plays with toys • 11:00 – 11:45 First class does crafts • 11:45 – lunch All finish doing crafts • Students record their day in their journal. They write a thank you card to those who volunteered or made donations.

  4. VOLUNTEERS • Cut felt for marble bags • Cut 6-inch fabric squares • Cut cardboard circles 5-inch diameter w/8 slits in the edge • Cut 4x6 foam board and paint silver • Trace and cut patterns for tin punch and paper chains • Cut butcher paper into 4-inch long strips • Cut 1/2-inch paper strips for weaving • Prepare cardboard looms • Cut 5-inch fabric squares for stitching • Cut 4x6 cardboard for yarn dolls • Long strips of 1-inch fabric • Mix black paint and water in jars for pen & ink • Count supplies. Are there enough for each student?

  5. BRAIDED RUG • Strips of 2-inch fabric • Clothes pin • Special tool [Old toothbrush handle with hole in end]

  6. STICHERY • Fabric 5-inch squares [burlap/gingham] • Embroidery thread • Needles • Scissors [Embroidery hoops if possible]

  7. PAPER CHAINS • 6 scissors • 10 pencils • Patterns • Strips of paper [Before activity: cut butcher paper into 4-inch strips and roll them up]

  8. BALL AND CUP • Small paper cups • Weight (washers/nuts) • Scissors • String • Small paper clips

  9. SWEET BAGS • Potpourri (dried flowers) • 6-inch fabric squares • Assorted ribbon/raffia • Scissors

  10. WIRLLIJIG • String • 2-Hole buttons • Scissors [sturdy paper plates (colored) can also be used.]

  11. MARBLES • Clay • Paper plates • Pencil Clay must dry before student can use them. They could be painted when dry.

  12. CORN HUSK DOLLS • Corn Husks • Bucket with water • String • Raffia • Rubber bands • Scissors • Paper towels • Newspapers

  13. YARN DOLLS • Yarn • Scissors • Rubber bands • Cardboard (6x4)

  14. PAPER WEAVING • Construction paper (variety) • Scissors (6) • Rulers (6) [Cut strips of paper before activity begins]

  15. YARN WEAVING • Yarn • Loom • Scissors • String [Looms can be made out of wood or cardboard.] [Shoe box lids work well.]

  16. TIN PUNCH • Special tool • Silver Paint • Foam board 4-inch squares • Patterns • [fake tin prepared ahead of time] • [tools borrowed] • [Could use pie tins/nails/hammer]

  17. MARBLE BAG • Felt (pre-cut) • Yarn • 6-Large-hole needles

  18. PEN AND INK • Large Feathers • Baby Food Jars with Black Tempera Paint mixed with water = ink • Paper • Calligraphy Patterns • Paper Towels • Newspaper

  19. POMANDER BALLS • Collect oranges or lemons • Varity of ribbon • Scissors • 6 nails • Whole cloves • Newspaper • Paper towels

  20. FRIENDSHIP BRACELET • Yarn • Raffia • Colored string • Scissors • Masking tape • Safety pins • Cardboard 5-inch diameter circle with 8 cuts in equal portions around the outer edge
