  2. What is Surrogacy? • Surrogacy is a type of arrangement that is done between a couple or an individual and a woman to carry and to deliver a baby for the couple or individual.  • There are a many women who are suffering from medical conditions which do not allow them to become pregnant or is considered dangerous to get pregnant. For such couples, surrogacy is an option that will allow them to have a baby of their own.

  3. Traditional Surrogacy • Gestational Surrogacy

  4. Traditional Surrogacy In a traditional surrogacy situation, the surrogate mother will become artificially inseminated with the sperm of the baby's biological father. In this case, the sperm is implanted into her uterus procedurally where the child can then develop in her womb. With traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother is also the biological mother of the child.

  5. Gestational Surrogacy In gestational surrogacy, an egg is removed from the intended mother or an anonymous donor and fertilized with the sperm of the intended father or anonymous donor. The fertilized egg, or embryo, is then transferred to a surrogate who carries the baby to term. The child is thereby genetically related to the woman who donated the egg and the intended father or sperm donor, but not the surrogate. Some lesbian couples find gestational surrogacy attractive because it permits one woman to contribute her egg and the other to carry the child.

  6. Advantage and Disadvantage Advantage Disadvantage Surrogacy is a long and tedious process and there are a lot of processes that are involved and therefore require patience on the part of the intended parents. It generally takes a lot of searching to find a surrogate mother who will be healthy and will be willing to your conditions and there are a lot of medical and legal procedures that will have to be put in place. There have been issues when surrogate mothers have not wanted to let go of the child, thereby complicating the whole scenario. The couple has to ensure that all the legal procedures are in place before committing themselves to surrogacy or else they may face legal issues later. • For couples who are aspiring to have their own child, surrogacy is a great option as they will have a baby that will be biologically theirs. • Many childless couples opt for adoption, but then they have to ensure that the history of the child is good and will suit them or else there can be issues between them and the child. Such issues can be eliminated through surrogacy where the child will be the own flesh and blood of the couple. • Surrogacy is a very good option for couples who are of the same gender. For such couple having a child naturally is impossible and therefore will have to opt for such methods to have a child of their own. In such cases, the source of the sperm or egg will have to be from one of the intended couple to avoid any legal complications in the future

  7. Risk and Side Effects Prior to beginning a surrogacy cycle, it is highly recommended that surrogates thoroughly discuss all potential risks and side effects with their fertility physician. There are several risks and side effects that may be associated with being a surrogate. • Blood Drawing - mild discomfort and some risk of developing a bruise at the needle site. • Reaction to Fertility Medication - hot flushes, feeling down or irritable, headaches and restlessness. • Ultrasound Examinations - no known risks, minimal discomfort. • Psychological Distress - sometimes associated with assisted reproductive technology procedures. • Carrying Multiples - multiple births carry risks to the health of the mother and the unborn babies. • Post-Partum Depression after Delivery - sadness and depression after delivering the child/children.
