  1. Whitetail Deer Hunting In Alabama – An Exciting Prospect For Many Every Year Like all sportspeople and those that have a favorite pastime, the whitetail deer hunter often looks forward to their next trip and books a visit to a leading lodge way in advance of the season. It is maintained, for example, that white-tailed deer is the most hunted of all animals in Alabama, which is a state that offers several great opportunities for hunters and wing-shooters. It is estimated that Alabama sees around 180, 000 deer hunters every season, with more than 300, 000 deer being harvested every year, even if some years yield more – or fewer – animals. In addition to hunters being offered what they want, and lodge owners entertaining those visitors that bring them the income they rely on, the local economy of rural Alabama receives a welcome injection too. Since no hunter is ever guaranteed success, it remains important for the hunter to find that lodge where they are more likely than elsewhere to be offered the best opportunities. The hunter wants to know they are visiting a lodge where the possibility of finding more buck than at another, is high. This means finding a lodge known for the systems they have in place to ensure their herds are doing well, that they thrive where they are and that they are unlikely to simply leave for a neighbor’s property, or for the next district. This can only really be achieved when a lodge has certain wildlife conservation principles in place, such as ethical hunting and no senseless killing out of herds, making sure systems are in place to help herds grow and deliver offspring that will, likewise, stay. This does not happen overnight, and the lodge that does not plan, will, in the long run, not be among those known for good hunting. That is why one finds that leading lodges employ experienced staff such as managers and wildlife biologists, professionals that keep track of animal movement, how many buck – and does, where that is allowed – are harvested each year and what the ratio male to female is. They plan the size of herds, also to make sure not too many animals have to compete for the available resources. In the end such well-planned policies lead to success in terms of the quality of the herd, and the quality of animals the hunter pays to hunt. True free-range deer is what everybody wants: animals raised in habitat where they are free to roam and where they are found on those properties that stand out for the quality of the deer, and also for the quality of the service they offer the visiting hunter. Another aspect that is looked at closely by lodges that plan well, is the stage of the ‘rut’, rut referring to the time of year when breeding takes place. The rut is a fairly short period, often no more than 2 weeks, and this is generally the period when the greatest movement among buck is recorded. This means, therefore, that these animals are more at risk since they are out and about more often, making them good targets. Therefore, the good lodge, lodges that plan well, are those that can offer the visitor a great experience when more success at harvesting is possible. Further: hunters are attracted to service too, which include the hunting positions that the lodge and their staff set up, be that a ladder stand in a bottom, or a shooting house on a food plot. Well-managed lodges consider all the important factors to ensure they remain at the top, that they are the lodge that hunters think of first when they plan a visit.
