  1. Alabama’s Black Belt – Famed for Legendary Hunting Opportunities Hunters all over the world have certain traits in common, such as a love for the outdoors and the thrill associated with bringing down their prey – often after having stalked if over distances and through thick bush, or across open savannas. The detail is found in the love for spending time out in the open or the wild, and often in the company of likeminded individuals or groups, even though many a hunter feels more comfortable on their own, with no mate, no wife or teenager to break their concentration. The astute hunter also makes sure they visit the region where they are most likely to enjoy a memorable time, whether that refers to the hunt only, or whether it also refers to the total experience, such as sharing experiences with other hunters, or the food and accommodation at a good lodge where you can simply kick back after a busy day. Very often it is all about the total experience, and also about friendships which are so forged. In America, for example, hunting is big business, in both the literal and figurative sense. Millions of dollars are spent every year by visitors that book a trip to a leading lodge, which can run into billions for the hunting industry as a whole when all relevant issues are considered, such as ammunition, travel expenses and the like. Hunting is, indeed, big business. For the hunter it is more about their own experience and the enjoyment to be derived from their visit to a good lodge, whether once a year or more often if you have the time and resources, such as retired individuals often are able to do. Good regions for hunting, and good lodges such as, say, Alabama’s Westervelt Lodge – and some others – are often booked way in advance as they are the ones constantly mentioned for the great opportunities that they offer the hunter and also the wing-shooter, the latter whose preference it is to shoot birds. When it comes to regions and areas which are considered for offering great opportunities to be able to hunt quality buck, and for the wing-shooter the chance to shoot sought-after birds such as, for example, quail, dove and pheasant, all is considered, such as where you are likely to find the best quality, where you are offered a good chance of success because of issues such as numbers, and where you are likely to spend time which you will forever afterwards cherish. For many hunters and wing-shooters one such region is Alabama’s Black Belt where great herds of whitetail deer roam and where good bird flocks make their home. The Black Belt is a relatively thin strip of land that cuts across Alabama, over 23 counties, which is popular for the opportunity the hunter gets to leave with quality buck and their own trophy. This region is indeed famed for the legendary hunts that have taken place there over the years, and for the quality of birds the wing-shooter is offered. The term ‘Black Belt’ refers to the dark soil of the region; it is fertile and an excellent environment for deer to roam and for other wildlife to thrive. Fishing in this water-rich area is equally popular, as is enjoying time in nature even if you do not hunt all the time. The Black Belt outshines most other regions for the number of great deer the hunter finds there when compared to other, similar regions. This means the hunter’s chances to leave with good buck – and doe’s where landowners allow these to be hunted – improve over many others’. Hunting in Alabama’s Black Belt remains a bucket list item for many, and for as long as there are good lodges in the region, hunters and wing-shooters are likely to flock to the area.
