However,littleisknownabouthowcaregiversandpeoplewith dementiainteractwiththehealthcaresystem,whichmaybe more challenging in the presence of cognitive disorders like memoryloss.
Introduction Morethan16millionAmericansprovidedailyhelptopeoplewith dementia(PWD).Caringforpeoplewithdisabilitiesdiffersfrombeing afamilycaregiverforseveralreasons. First,astheirphysical,cognitive,andemotionalabilitiesdeteriorate, PWD requires more caregiver monitoring, dementia support with instrumentalactivitiessuchasmoneymanagementordriving,and self-caredutieslikewashingandclothing. Second,PWDbehaviouralchangesandcommunicationchallenges may increase caregiving demands and caregiver stress in later phases,leadingtolossesincaregivers'mentalandphysicalhealth. contd...
PWDfrequentlydealwithvariouschronicdiseasesandage-related changes,suchasdiminishingvisionandhearing,becauseageisacritical riskfactorfordementiapatients. Therefore, a multidisciplinary team must provide continuous, comprehensive,andcoordinatedtreatmentforthiscomplexnetworkof functionalimpairments. Conclusion Theneedfordementia-capablecarethatconsidersthe complexityoftheconditionforpatientswithdementia(PWD) andtheircarersisexpanding. From the perspective of family caregivers of PWD, this study highlighted three elements of interacting with the healthcare system,bothduringandafterthevisit,outliningpossiblebarriers andfacilitators.
