INTRODUCTION

-Several misunderstandings about drinking alcohol exist in the church today

-Is it sinful to drink a glass of wine? Can I drink “socially”? What does the Bible say about drinking alcohol?

-Our brethren are trying to find a way to justify “social” drinking.

-There are some facts that we will consider from God’s word that may help us to understand the truth on this important matter…

-There are 3 Hebrew words for wine in the OT

*tiyrowsh - “fresh or new wine” (0% alcoholic content…grape juice)

*Used 38 times in the OT (Prov. 3:10; Joel 2:24; Hos. 9:2)

*tiyrowsh

-Since natural fermentation takes place when grapes are pressed, methods were used to insure the purity of the juice (boiling into paste)

*yayin – “full fermentation” (5-8% alcoholic content)

*In every case outside of medicinal purposes, this drink is condemned out of 135 uses in the OT

*Is used 22 times…and is always condemned

*oinos – used for both grape juice and fermented wine

-Even the Greek translation of the OT used this one word for both kinds of drink

-The context must determine its usage

*oinos – This wine was made with 1 part wine, 3 parts water (1.5%)

-Anything more or less than this was undesirable

2 parts > 2 parts = Strong

1 part > 4 parts = Weak

*oinos – The formula for wine (common table beverage) had a purpose (Contact Welch’s)

-Water alone had microbes that would be killed by the juice

-The juice would help to make people well (I Tim. 5:23)

-For hundreds of years they had this method for common drinks

-The people didn’t want to be drunk, just well.

“let him with a stomach problem take sweet wine (grape juice) either mixed with water or warmed as good for the stomach, for sweet wine (oinos) does not make the head heavy”

*oinos – Pliny, Columella, and Philo:

“the wines that are destitute of all strength were exceedingly wholesome and useful to the body”… Also wine for the sick “had their forces broken by the strainer” (filtration)

*It would take 10 servings of 1st century wine to equal one drink of wine today

*Your bladder is affected before your equilibrium

*Some were “given to much wine”…not Christians

*Today you are considered under the influence at .04% and can get a ticket for .08% (1 drink)

*It wasn’t until the 9th century that such methods were known for 95% alcoholic content in hard liquor

*We need to see the danger in drinking alcohol (Prov. 20:1; 23:29-35)

*At a marriage feast, Jesus made between 120-180 gallons of wine …. “the best”

*The people had “well drunk”(drank it all) and wanted more

*Did Jesus create a temptation to sin? (Matt. 6:13)

*Were these people drunk?…Not off of the wine (oinos) Jesus made… (1.5% alcohol)

*To say that Jesus made strong drink is blasphemy

*Jesus miracle was for a good purpose (John 2:11)

*If you talk with wine specialists they will tell you that the body, fragrance, and flavor are important…not alcohol

*Pliny, Plutarch, and Horace all said the “the best” wine was that without spirit

*To have excess of wine as in reveling (drinking parties) is a sin

*Carousing (drinking without reference to amount) will keep you out of heaven

*We need to maintain a sober life and set the example spiritually (I Tim. 3:3; Tit. 1:7; 2:3)

*Carousing carries the idea of nausea, headache, vomiting, that accompany drinking

*Is this really the only kind of “fun” people can find to do?

*When the apostles spoke with new tongues, they were accused of being “full of new wine” (drunk)

*Jesus was accused of being an excessive drinker

*We need to notice that it took a great deal to get drunk in the 1st century (Acts 2:15)

*Peter’s argument is that it was “only the third hour”

*To be excessive with wine was to be a drunkard

*How do you find your limit… before you get drunk?

*Every social drinker to know their “limit”…has to learn where it is…catching a buzz at some point or another

-We need to take seriously the nature of this issue amongst our brethren

-We are dealing with sin when were involved in drunkenness…and social drinking is the first step to this sin

-We need to come to the Lord and seek His forgiveness if we have sinned in any way
