Acivir cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) is indicated for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) in immunocompetent adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older.<br> It can speed up healing of the sores and decrease symptoms (such as tingling, pain, burning, itching). Acyclovir belongs to a class of medications known as antivirals. It works by stopping the growth of the virus.

Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Uses of Acivir 5% Cream: Acivir cream (Acyclovir 5% cream) belongs to a class of medications known as antivirals and is used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin, lips, mucous membranes, and genitals (sex organs) in the initial and recurrent situation. This medication is used to treat "cold sores/fever blisters" (herpes labialis). It can speed up healing of the sores and decrease symptoms (such as tingling, pain, burning, itching). It works by stopping the growth of the virus. This medication does not cure herpes, and it does not prevent passing the infection to someone else. It does not prevent a future occurrence. Topical acyclovir may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.   7. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Recommended Adult Dosage For most patients, Acivir cream Acivir cream (Acyclovir 5% cream) should be applied 5 times per day for 4 days. Treatment should be started as early as possible following onset of signs and symptoms (i.e., during the prodrome or when lesions appear). For adolescents 12 years of age and older, the dosage is the same as in adults. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Storage Instructions Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir Cream) has to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F). Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Warnings Acivir cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) is intended for cutaneous use only and should not be used in the eyes or inside the mouth, nose or vagina as it may cause irritation. Acivir Cream should only be used on herpes labialis on the affected external aspects of the lips and face. Aciclovir cream has a potential for irritation and contact sensitization. The effect of Aciclovir cream has not been established in immunocompromised patients.   11. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Warnings The recommended dosage, frequency of applications, and length of treatment should not be exceeded . There are no data to support the use of Acivir cream 5% to prevent transmission of infection to other persons or prevent recurrent infections when applied in the absence of signs and symptoms. Acivir cream 5% should not be used for the prevention of recurrent HSV infections. Although clinically significant viral resistance associated with the use of Acivir cream 5% has not been observed, this possibility exists.   12. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Warnings Systemic exposure following topical administration of Acivir cream (Acyclovir 5% Cream) is minimal. Dermal carcinogenicity studies were not conducted. In severely immune-compromised patients (eg AIDS patients or bone marrow transplant recipients) oral acyclovir dosing should be considered. Such patients should be encouraged to consult a physician concerning the treatment of any infection. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Possible Side Effects Acivir cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) side effects are listed below: Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Uncommon: Transient burning or stinging following application of Acivir cream, Mild drying or flaking of the skin, Itching. Rare: Erythema, Contact dermatitis following application. Where sensitivity tests have been conducted, the reactive substances have most often been shown to be components of the cream rather than Acyclovir. Immune System disorders: Very rare: Immediate hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Overdosage No untoward effects would be expected if the entire contents of a Acivir cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) 10 gms tube containing 500 mg of Acyclovir were ingested orally. However the accidental, repeated overdose of oral Aciclovir, over several days has resulted in gastrointestinal effects (nausea and vomiting) and neurological effects (headache and confusion). Acyclovir is dialysable.   15. Acivir Cream (Generic Acyclovir 5% Cream) Acivir Cream During Pregnancy Acyclovir Cream (Acivir cream 5 %) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Acyclovir was not teratogenic in the mouse, rabbit, or rat at exposures greatly in excess of human exposure. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of systemic acyclovir in pregnant women. Acyclovir pregnancy registry has documented pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to any formulation of Acyclovir. The registry findings have not shown an increase in the number of birth defects amongst acyclovir exposed subjects compared with the general population, and any birth defects showed no uniqueness or consistent pattern to suggest a common cause.
