  1. Immunosuppressed Patients: A guide to living The immune system of every patient, who undergoes a liver transplantation surgery, is suppressed by the surgeons. Our immune system is defensive towards foreign bodies. It detects any unknown entity in the human body, and attempts to destroy it. That is how we cure from certain diseases, our immune system kills the unwanted invaders that cause them. But, it fails to differentiate between harmful invaders and transplanted liver. When a patient goes through a liver transplantation, their immune system recognises the new liver as a potential harm to the body, and just as it is designed to do, it attempts to destroy it by attacking it. Therefore, after the transplantation, the surgeons suppress the immune system of the patients to avoid harm on the new liver. The process is termed as Immunosuppression. Since the immune system no longer functions the way it used to, the human body of the immunosuppressed is more prone to infections. This is where the patients need to take intensive care of their health. They keep balancing in between rejection and infections. According to Dr. Vivek Vij, the Cost of liver transplant in india the following care can be taken to maintain a balance between the two- 1.Steer clear of people who are sick It is important that an immunosuppressed patient stays away from anyone who is sick, to avoid catching diseases. Exposure to germs must be minimised through every possible manner. 2.Wash your hands often A lot of germs often enter through your hand, it is important to keep them clean always. Wash your hands before and after you consume food, wash your hands every time you go to washroom, and wash them after you meet someone.

  2. 3.Practice safe sex It is important than an immunosuppressed patient practice safe sex. They are not immune to sexually transmitted diseases, therefore they must ensure to have protected sex with their partners. Also, monogamous sex practices are also suggested to avoid STDs. 4.Do not pet animals An immunosuppressed patient is strictly advised not to pet animals, since they carry a lot of germs. It is necessary for them to limit their exposure to germs for their well-being. 5.Avoid going to crowded places Immunosuppressed patients can catch diseases quickly, and take longer than usual to recover. Therefore it is not suggested that they go to crowded places. 6.Consumption of healthy diet Dr. Vivek Vij, expert in liver transplantation, from Fortis Hospital, ie. the best Liver transplant success rate in india, suggests that an immunosuppressed person takes a balanced diet. They must wash the fruits and vegetables well before consuming or cooking them. Only pasteurised milk should be consumed by them. Fats, alcohol, and cigarettes must be avoided at all costs. It is important that a patient takes good care of themselves after a transplantation. They must ensure to schedule their appointments with the transplant team in regular intervals, and that any issue faced is reported to their doctor immediately.
