GOD COMES TO US

Your king comes to you,

righteous and having salvation,

gentle and riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

Amen.

Friends in Christ: For the five weeks of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord's suffering and death. Today, together with the whole church, we begin this Holy Week by welcoming our Messiah.

We read in the gospel of John:

He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.

So, like the people of long ago, let us welcome Jesus and walk with him to the cross.

Slide4 l.jpg

If we have been united with him in a death like his,

we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

Slide5 l.jpg

The Lord be with you:

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Lord, as we honour Christ the King by carrying these branches today, increase our faith and listen to our prayers, so that we may honour you every day, by living always in him. For he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

We pray Psalm 118:1,2,19-29

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever!

Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Slide8 l.jpg

Open to me the gates of righteousness,

that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.

This is the gate of the Lord: the righteous shall enter through it.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Slide9 l.jpg

I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.

The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Save us we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Slide10 l.jpg

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

We bless you from the house of the Lord.

The Lord is God, and he has given us light. Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Slide11 l.jpg

You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you.

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Slide14 l.jpg

Almighty and eternal God,

you sent your Son, our Saviour, to take our nature on himself and to suffer and die on the cross. Lead us to follow the example of his great humility, and bring us to share in his resurrection. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Psalm 31:9,10, 13-16

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;

My eye wastes away from grief, my soul and body also.

For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing;

My strength fails because of my misery, and my bones waste away.

Slide17 l.jpg

For I hear the whispering of many – terror all around! –

as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.

But I trust in you, O Lord; I say,

“You are my God.”

My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.

Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.

Slide21 l.jpg

We listen to the address

Slide22 l.jpg

We confess our faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ,

his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried.

Slide23 l.jpg

He descended into hell. The third day he rose again

from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty,

from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Slide24 l.jpg

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

* ‘catholic’ here meaning 'universal'

GOD RECEIVES OUR OFFERING

We sing a hymn/song as our offering is received

Slide26 l.jpg

We pray an offering prayer

Let us offer our thanks to God.

What can I offer to the Lord for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call on the name of the Lord. I will keep my promises to the Lord in the presence of all his people;

in the courts of the house of the Lord,

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Slide27 l.jpg

We pray for ourselves and the world

Prayer response:

Lord, in your mercy:

hear our prayer.

Slide28 l.jpg

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.

Slide29 l.jpg

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those

who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yoursnow and forever. Amen.

Slide30 l.jpg

Christ himself suffered for us

and left us an example,

so that we would follow

in his steps.

He committed no sin,

and no-one ever heard a lie

come from his lips.

Slide31 l.jpg

When he was insulted,

he did not answer back with an insult;

when he suffered,

he did not threaten,

but placed his hopes in God,

the righteous judge.

Christ himself carried our sins

in his body to the cross,

so that we might die to sin

and live for righteousness.

Slide32 l.jpg

It is by his wounds

that we have been healed.

We were like sheep

that had lost their way,

but now we have been brought back to follow the shepherd

and keeper of our souls.

Slide33 l.jpg

Christ our crucified Saviour draw you to himself, so that you may find in him the assurance of sins forgiven and the gift of eternal life.

And the blessing of almighty God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

be with us now and always.

Amen
