  2. Knights • Some nobles fought as knights • Nobles provided knights for the King instead of paying taxes • Nobles were expected to lead their knights into battle • Had to be with the King 40 days of the year – paid by the King if needed for longer

  3. Knights • Knights were wealthy, they could afford • - Heavy armour (chain mail) • - Powerful horses • Used a variety of weapons Lances Maces Swords Axes

  4. Infantry • Usually lower, poorer classes • Used spears, swords, and daggers • Scottish spears sometimes 10 to 12 feet • Schiltroms could hold off cavalry • Not well protected from archers • Sometimes wore metal helmets

  5. Archers • Longbowmen • English and Welsh • Metal tipped arrows • Accurate to range of quarter mile • Could embed an arrow in 1.25 inches of solid oak • Could pierce chain mail • High number of arrows needed and protection from cavalry • Crossbowmen • More accurate and deadly • Took long time to load • English sometimes hired from continent

  6. Weapons of Warfare • Axe • Common weapon of infantry • Many used same axe in working lives • Claymore • Used by Scottish • Used against charging horses • Used to bludgeon opponents to death • Weighed 15lb • Difficult to use in pitched battles

  7. Weapons of Warfare • Dagger • Used to stab opponents • Dirk (Throat Dagger) • Short stabbing knife • Used by Scottish • Used to cut throats of wounded on battlefield
