Slide 1:The Claim of Apostleship

Slide 2:What is an Apostle?

Apostle (APOSTOLOS): “a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders.” - Thayer’s Greek Lexicon

Slide 3:What is an Apostle?

Sometimes Christians were “sent forth” on a mission by the church and therefore were called “apostles.” e.g. Barnabas Acts 13:3/ 14:14

Slide 4:What is an Apostle?

An apostle of Christ is a person who was “sent forth” by Christ Himself to speak His word as inspired by God.

Slide 5:Example: The apostle Paul

Romans 1:1 (NASB) Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God.

Slide 6:Many religious groups claim to have apostles of Christ today.

The Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, and Episcopal Church all believe in apostolic succession.

Slide 7:Many religious groups claim to have apostles of Christ today.

The Mormon Church believes that Joseph Smith became an apostle and was given the same apostolic authority as original apostles of Christ. Mormon apostles today trace their authority to the ordinations that took place over the years beginning with Smith.

Slide 8:Many religious groups claim to have apostles of Christ today.

Charismatic and Pentecostal groups believe that there are apostles today who can perform miracles and speak new revelation.

Slide 9:Many religious groups claim to have apostles of Christ today.

The leader of the Discipling Movement (i.e. International Churches of Christ) has claimed apostleship and expected his words to be followed as God’s words.

Slide 10:Why the claim for apostleship is very significant. If there are apostles today…

Then miracles through men is still possible. Then new revelation or instruction of God’s will is still given today in addition to the Bible. Then there are men today who exercise authority and leadership over the church just as the original apostles did.

Slide 11:The Special Qualifications to be an Apostle of Christ.

Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself Jesus chose the twelve to be His apostles, meaning they were sent with full authority to represent Him. Jesus would speak through His apostles.

Slide 12:Luke 6:12-13 (NASB)

12 And it was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him; and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:

Slide 13:Luke 6:14-16 (NASB)

14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. - cf. Mark 3:14-19

Slide 14:Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself.

Even in the casting of lots to decide who would replace Judas Iscariot was a decision from the Lord for Matthias (Acts 1:23-26; cf. Prov. 16:33).

Slide 15:Acts 1:23-26 (NKJV)

23 And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, "You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place."

Slide 16:Matthias was also chosen by the Lord.

Acts 1:26 (NKJV) And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Proverb 16:33 (NASB) The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

Slide 17:Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself.

The apostle Paul was chosen by Jesus (Acts 9:15; 26:16; 2 Cor. 11:5).

Slide 18:Acts 9:15 (NASB)

But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel.

Slide 19:The Special Qualifications to be an Apostle of Christ.

Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself Witness of the resurrection of Christ

Slide 20:Acts 1:21-22 (NKJV)

21 "Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection."

Slide 21:1 Corinthians 15:7-8 (NASB)

7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as it were to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.

Slide 22:The Special Qualifications to be an Apostle of Christ.

Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself Witness of the resurrection of Christ Baptized by the Holy Spirit

Slide 23:Baptized by the Holy Spirit

Jesus promised the apostles only that the Father would send the Holy Spirit after His departure to help them (John 14:16-26).

Slide 24:John 14:25-26 (NASB)

“These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

Slide 25:The apostles were not mere servants (or disciples), but special chosen friends of Jesus who were entrusted with the Holy Spirit.

Slide 26:John 15:15-16 (NASB)

15 "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 "You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give to you.

Slide 27:John 15:26 (NASB)

“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of Me.”

Slide 28:John 16:13 (NASB)

"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

Slide 29:Jesus reminds the apostles of the Father’s promise after His resurrection just before His ascension to Heaven.

Slide 30:Luke 24:49 (NASB)

"And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

Slide 31:Acts 1:6-8 (NASB)

6 And so when they (the apostles – v.1) had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. "

Slide 32:Baptized by the Holy Spirit

Their being “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4; cf. Acts 9:17) enabled them to speak in tongues God’s revelation - evidence of apostleship. Holy Spirit baptism by itself is not proof of apostleship, for Cornelius’ household received it and did not become apostles (Acts 10:44-45).

Slide 33:The Special Qualifications to be an Apostle of Christ.

Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself Witness of the resurrection of Christ Baptized by the Holy Spirit Able to perform signs, wonders, and miracles.

Slide 34:Even before Pentecost, the apostles were performing miracles as authorized by Jesus (e.g. Luke 9:1-2).

Slide 35:Luke 9:1-2 (NASB)

1 And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God, and to perform healing.

Slide 36:2 Corinthians 12:12 (NASB)

The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles.

Slide 37:Mark 16:16-17 (NASB)

16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. 17 "And these signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;

Slide 38:Mark 16:18-19 (NASB)

18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it shall not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. " 19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.

Slide 39:Mark 16:20 (NASB)

And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.

Slide 40:Miraculous signs accompanied baptized believers provided they had received the laying on of the apostles’ hands (e.g., Acts 8:4-24; 19:5-6).

Slide 41:Unlike modern claims, the miracles the apostles performed were observable, instantaneous, and undeniable (e.g., Acts 3:16).

Slide 42:Acts 3:16 (NASB)

“And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.”

Slide 43:The Special Qualifications to be an Apostle of Christ.

Directly chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself Witness of the resurrection of Christ Baptized by the Holy Spirit Able to perform signs, wonders, and miracles Essential to the foundation to the church

Slide 44:The original apostles are set apart from all others who make the claim of apostleship, for only they are the foundation to the church (Eph. 2:19-20).

Slide 45:Ephesians 2:19-20 (NKJV)

19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.

Slide 46:Ephesians 3:4-5 (NASB)

4 And by referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit.

Slide 47:Beware of False Apostles!

All modern day claims by anyone to be an apostle are false, for no one can meet all of these qualifications to be an apostle today!

Slide 48:No person on earth can prove that he was chosen by the Lord to be an apostle. No one today can claim to be a witness of the resurrection of Jesus. Claims of receiving Holy Spirit baptism are false, for it was promised only to the apostles (w/ exception of Cornelius). No one has legitimately performed signs, wonders, and miracles that are observable, instantaneous, and undeniably a miracle. No one has the right to place themselves on equal footing with the apostles who are the foundation to the church!

Slide 49:Beware of False Apostles!

All modern day claims by anyone to be an apostle are false, for no one can meet all of these qualifications to be an apostle today! We must beware of false apostles, lest we be led astray.

Slide 50:2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (NASB)

13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their deeds.

Slide 51:Paul’s warning lives on today in a world where men disguise themselves as apostles of Christ and deceive many to believe in religious error!

Slide 52:Claims by modern day “apostles” of receiving “Latter-day revelations” or possessing an “infallible teaching office” are claims we need to beware of.

Slide 53:False apostles (prophets or teachers) will teach destructive doctrines, teachings that are contrary to the truth of Scripture.

Slide 54:2 Peter 2:1-3 (NASB)

1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3 and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Slide 55:False apostles will teach a “different gospel” than the original gospel of the apostles and will lead us away from salvation in Jesus.

Slide 56:Galatians 1:6-8 (NASB)

6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed…

Slide 57:Galatians 1:9 (NASB)

As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.

Slide 58:The Office of an Apostle No Longer Exists in the Church Today. Yet, the Teaching of the Apostles Lives on. Let Us devote ourselves to it! (Acts 2:42)
