  2. Location • Korea is located on a peninsula. • A peninsula is a geographical formation consisting of an extension of land from a larger body, surrounded by water on three sides. • Korea’s southern most tip points at Japan.

  3. Korea’s Landscape • An early visitor to the region described the landscape as “a sea in a heavy gale.” A gale is another word for wind. • Korea has a landscape that is described as being mountainous. • The mountains are low with regards to overall height, but very steep.

  4. As a result of the T’aeback Rage running along the Eastern shore, farming in the region is very difficult. The greatest population is in the Western portion of the country. Here farming is more practical. Population Location

  5. Coastline Leads To Fishing • Korea has 5,400 miles of coastline. • There are many good harbors and thousands of islands that are fantastic for fishing. • Since its beginnings, Korea has relied on its fishing for industry. • Fish provide protein that is essential for a healthy diet.

  6. Impact of Korea’s Location • Today, Korea has one of the largest fishing industries in the world. • It is the seventh largest, with a catch of 2.9 million metric tons per year. One metric ton = 2,204.6 pounds. • A cultural bridge between China and Japan. • Many traditions that began in China, moved to Korea and were passed to Japan. For example, the Haiku began by adapting Chinese poetry models.
