Pine Forrest Retreat Center is a ministry that offers a broad spectrum of retreat and camping programs for children, youth and adults. The board consists of the director, an accountant, two pastors of local churches, two parents whose children have attended the camp and a retired businessman. The ministry had been experiencing a gradual increase in expenses and no growth in revenue, resulting in depletion of most of its reserve. During this time, a few members asked questions about this and were told everything would work out. One member even recommended bringing in outside help to assess the situation and provide recommendations but this was not discussed any further. It is now discovered that registrations are down and there were some mistakes in planning, resulting in a deficit of $70,000. The director subsequently resigned, blaming the board for their unwillingness to support his ideas and leadership and the board is blaming him for his poor oversight and management. How may the board have contributed to this?
