  2. Alternative name The alternative name is zebra backed woodpecker. Scientific name The scientific name is Melanerpes carolinus)

  3. Description They are 22 to 24cm in length. Juveniles are duller with white & black pigment on their body. They are medium size birds. Male has black & white barred on its back with red cap. Female has red patch on bill & nape &  white cap. They are monotypic.

  5. Appearance They have smaller delicate bill. Male is red in color from upper part of the bill from crown to nape. Female lack red cap. Both sexes have black & white barred pattern on their back. Male has reddish white belly. Eyes are balck. The feet are greyish black.

  7. Habitat They are found along main branches, Eastern woodlands,forests, hardwoods and pines, backyard feeders, trunks of trees,groves, towns, shade trees in suburbs.maple and tulip-poplar stands, and pine flatwoods & river bottoms.

  8. Distribution Range This specie is distributed in worldwide countries including,Southeast, Northeast,  northeastern Colorado,provinces of Canada and west to eastern, India,Bangladesh, China, Pakistan, Iran , and Turkey.

  9. Vocalization This specie is a noisy bird. They have beautiful voice. Their call can be described as two notes churrr & chiv chiv. They attract each other for matting through their beautiful sound.

  11. Feeding They primarily feed insects, arthropods,lizards, small frogs, oozing sap,fruits, nuts and seeds, peanuts, and sunflower seeds, berries, plenty of plant material,  acorns, pine cones, grapes, oranges, mangoes, nestling birds

  12. Flight Its flight is direct and short. They usually fly to catch insects

  13. Breeding The mating season begins in april & ends in May. 3 to 8 eggs are incubated by both sexes. Incubation period is 2weeks. Juvenile leave nest in 22days after hatching. They usually build nests in cavities.
