  1. Exploring the Path Toward Becoming an Orthopaedic Surgeon With an average U.S. salary of $519,000, per Forbes, it is not surprising why quite a few people are interested in becoming an orthopaedic surgeon. There is a wide variety of diseases, disorders and other conditions experienced within the musculoskeletal system of the human body. Orthopaedic surgeons are trained and knowledgeable experts that are able to save lives, improve the quality of their patients’ lives and make a substantial living for themselves and their families. There are several points to consider if you are interested in becoming an orthopaedic surgeon.

  2. Pay Attention to Your Undergraduate Studies If your goal is to become an orthopaedic surgeon, you must pay close attention to your undergraduate studies. With a specific career goal in mind, it is important to focus on the specific courses that you will need later down the line of your journey towards achieving that goal. Within the standard four years you will spend as an undergraduate, you must have at least one year of biology, one year of physics and two years of biology. Working with a counsellor or Admissions specialist. Conquering the MCAT Before you can start your first day of medical school, you need to successfully pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Do not be discouraged; the same principle applies for most postgraduate learning opportunities such as business school, dental school and law school. There are several key sections to the MCAT including physical sciences and biological sciences, verbal as well as a written sample. The knowledge you gained

  3. throughout your years as an undergraduate will pay off when it comes to overcoming the obstacle known as the MCAT. It is important to remember that passing the MCAT does not necessarily mean you will automatically make it into medical school. Studies have shown that only 5-10 percent of applicants get accepted, which is why it is important to keep your options open in regards to the medical schools to which you apply. Medical School & National Board Exams Once you make it to medical school, you have four years of intense study and rigorous learning ahead. The first two years of medical school keep you inside of a classroom, but the last two years will place you directly inside of a hospital – working alongside experienced doctors to improve and save the lives of actual patients. The National Board Exams are major obstacles in themselves, but they will put you one step closer to a spine care residency or other lucrative and life-saving opportunities within the world of orthopaedics.

  4. Patience, Patience and Patience Many people dream of becoming doctors and surgeons. However, relatively few are able to overcome the necessary obstacles and progress through the required stages of the career path to achieve this monumental goal. Along with all of the training, studying, test-taking and overall learning, it is important for you to have a lot of patience. The patience that you cultivate as you work your way toward becoming an orthopaedic surgeon will pay off as you patiently work with your fellow physicians, surgeons and patients throughout your career.
