What you need to know about Warehouses and Warehousing services in India A warehouse is a building that is used for storing goods by wholesale marketers, customs, export companies, and packers, and movers, etc. These are generally located outside the cities. The warehouses in India are referred to as godowns. Warehousing is the act of storing goods for sale, distribution, or in transit. A warehouse is an essential element of the global supply chain. It plays a critical role in the acquisition, manufacture, and distribution services of commodities.

  4. A. Warehouse business The whole business of warehousing goes along with logistics management. The latter is a sophisticated industry. This involves the supply chain that includes marketing, sales, development of the product, etc. It is estimated that warehousing stock will grow by 21% every year.

  5. B. Inside the warehouse The purpose of warehouses is store goods safely without being damaged. A warehouse is not merely a shed for storing goods. It also contains several essential elements that include the following.

  6. C. Types of Warehouses • There are five types of warehouses. • Private Warehouses • Public Warehouses • Bonded Storage • Co-operative Warehouses • Distribution Centres

  7. 1. Private Warehouses Private Warehouses are owned and run by manufacturers or traders. These warehouses are not rented out and used for the owners' business only. Examples of these include: Farmers' warehouses, retail sellers' warehouses, warehouses constructed near production units.

  8. 2. Public Warehouses The government and semi-government bodies own this type of warehouses. They are rented out to private firms on a rental basis. The owners of open warehouses comprise of a small group of traders who are unable to set up a warehouse on their own due to financial constraint. This helps the government to promote trade and also make some revenue from renting out these warehouses.

  9. 3. Bonded Storage This type of warehouses is used by the government and also by private agencies. Their utility lies in storing imported goods for which import duty has to be paid. These warehouses have to obtain a valid paper and license from the government to run them. This type of warehouses is found near ports where excise and customs duty has to be collected.

  10. 4. Co-operative Warehouses This type of warehouses is owned and managed by co-operative societies. The storage facilities are offered only to their members at a nominal rate. The primary purpose of this group of warehouses is to help its members. The service is not profit driven.

  11. 5. Distribution Centres The ordinary warehouses generally can store goods for an extended period like even a year. Distribution centres, on the other hand, hold them for a short period. They are meant for storing a large number of goods for a short period. These warehouses serve as points of production and distribution of products. Distribution centres are equipped with computers that move goods quickly.

  12. D. Warehouse management system (WMS). The warehouse management system (WMS) is a software application that is used for controlling and managing the daily activities that go on in a particular warehouse.
