General clearing cache l.jpg

The Temporary Internet Files folder is the location on your hard drive where Web pages and files are stored as you view them. This speeds up delivery of pages you visit frequently or have already seen.

If the folder lacks sufficient space, you are not able to view a report. If you are having difficulty viewing a report, clear the files in this folder by clicking the 'Delete Files…' button in the Temporary Internet Files panel and the 'Clear History' button in the History panel. This is comparable to clearing cache in Netscape.

General—Clearing Cache

General setting tmp space l.jpg

Increasing the space you set for the Temporary Internet Files folder can increase the speed for displaying previously visited pages, but decreases the amount of space available for other files on your computer. You can set the size of this folder to control the amount of space it uses on your hard drive.

To increase the space allocated to the folder click the 'Settings…' button and reset the size of the folder by moving the 'Amount of disk space to use' scale to the right. Note that this decreases the amount of space available for other files on your computer.

The 'Default Level…' button will open the dialog box depicted below. It displays the current default security level, but does not provide access to the Active X controls.

Privacy settings l.jpg

Privacy—Settings

The privacy setting in Internet Explorer manages the handling of "cookies". A cookie is a unique identifier that a site on the Internet provides to the browser and that resides on the desktop. It enables the site that put it there to track a user's actions and the time spent on the site. It can also collect information about the user that can be made available for purposes like marketing.

The privacy settings in Internet Explorer range from "Accept All Cookies" to "Block All Cookies". Settings include the following:

> Accept All Cookies

> Low

> Medium

> Medium High

> High

> Block All Cookies

Recommended settings for privacy are Medium or Medium High.

Advanced set defaults l.jpg

Advanced—Set Defaults

The Advanced tab under Internet Options provides settings for

> Accessibility

> Browsing

> HTTP1.1

> Java (Sun)

> Microsoft VM

> Multimedia

> Printing

> Search from the Address bar

> Security

We recommend that you use the default settings. If you experience problems using Internet Explorer with Oracle Financials, as a first step, restore the default settings. Click the 'Restore Defaults' button on the 'Advanced' tab.

Advanced security settings l.jpg

Advanced—Security Settings

Check that the settings under 'Security' in the 'Advanced' tab match the settings described in the picture to the left.

WARNING

Enabling the option 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk' will make it impossible for you to download files and PDF reports from the Harvard Data Warehouse. If you experience problems downloading, first make sure that this option is unchecked.

Pop up window blocker l.jpg

Pop-up Window Blocker

A pop-up window blocker prevents new windows from opening automatically when you visit a website by intercepting an incoming window and preventing it from being displayed. Such windows often contain advertising and can block your view of the content on the page.

However, a pop-up window blocker can also interfere with your ability to perform certain functions in Oracle Financials and Harvard's Financial data warehouse like uploading budgets in the Budget Tool or viewing reports in HUDINI.

The picture above shows a pop-up window blocker that comes with the Google toolbar and has been added to the Internet Explorer browser. If it interferes with the performance of Harvard's financial applications, you can disable it temporarily or enable it to by-pass the blocker for particular sites.

To allow a pop-up window through on a one-time basis using Google hold down the CTRL key as you click a link to a new page. "White listing" allows you to by-pass the blocker for the sites you specify. You can disable the blocker altogether by clearing the checkbox for the pop-up blocker in the Accessories section of the Toolbar Options window.

Pop up window blocker19 l.jpg

When the Google pop-up window blocker intercepts an incoming window, the cursor's appearance changes momentarily to this icon and displays the number of pop-up windows blocked since the installation of the toolbar.

An introductory dialogue box also displays the first time you use the blocker. It provides information about disabling the blocker or adding the site to a "white list". The blocker uses the white list to turn itself off when you visit sites where you want to view pop-ups like Oracle Financials or HUDINI.

To add HUDINI to the white list click the pop-up blocker button on the tool bar when the gateway page displays. The 'Popups okay' message will appear in the pop-up blocker button.

To add Oracle Financials to the white list click the pop-up blocker button on the tool bar when the gateway page displays. The 'Popups okay' message will appear in the pop-up blocker button.

Tool bar discussion button l.jpg

Tool Bar—Discussion Button

Office Server Extensions (OSE) in Microsoft Office enables users who are working collaboratively to store documents and to discuss their content through the Web Discussion feature of OSE. It requires a web server for storing the documents to be specified during installation of OSE. The Discussion button on the toolbar in Internet Explorer allows users to add comments about the documents. The web servers for Oracle Financials do not provide this functionality and should not be specified as the web server for Discussions. You will not be able to use applications like AWS2 if this feature is enabled when logging in.

J initiator java applet error l.jpg

J-initiator Java Applet Error

Although Oracle allows more than one version of the J-initiator to be installed on a desktop, the application can display a Java Applet error message (FRM-92100) when it finds a large number of versions stored there.

If you receive this error message in applications where the J-initiator is required, de-install all J-initiator versions and re-install the latest version required for the application.

A copy of the latest version is available on the applications page of the vpf-web site.
