  1. November 10, 2017 How to Get Your Sea Legs on Multiple Day Crewed Yacht Charters A multiple day voyage on a seafaring vessel is by far the best way to explore the San Juan archipelago. Sailing is a fun and easy vacation for most, but if someone in your party should suffer from motion sickness, they might have a more difficult time adjusting onboard. That shouldn’t discourage you from enjoying the trip, though. Help them get their sea legs easily with a few advanced preparations. Here are some great tips for smooth sailing. 1 | P a g e

  2. Set Forth to Calmer Waters In favorable weather, the Salish Sea is relatively calm, offering a smooth sailing experience to sailors. The entire Salish Sea is a waterway protected from Pacific Ocean swells by hundreds of little islands as well as the 290 mile-long Vancouver Island. You won't have to worry about choppy waters and large waves rocking the boat. But just to make doubly sure, check the weather forecasts or ask experienced local sailors when the best time for sailing is. Drink Over-the-Counter Medicine Taking motion sickness medications can be of great help, but remember that you have to take them ahead of schedule. Get the non-drowsy variant so you don’t miss anything important as well. Some begin taking the tablets a day or two prior to sailing so the medicine has already taken effect once you step on deck. Those who suffer from severe motion sickness may want to ask their physician for prescriptions that can better counter the symptoms. Wear Anti-Motion Sickness Wristbands Acupressure, a form of healing that involves applying pressure to key points on the body is an age-old cure for seasickness. This is the brilliant concept behind anti-motion sickness wristbands and bracelets, and a great alternative if you want to go the drug-free route. These bands are sold in packs and must be worn correctly on each wrist. There are a good selection of products on the market, so take your time choosing what suits you best. Hang Out on the Ship’s Deck For first time cruisers out there, don’t spend all day cooped up in a cabin below decks. Not only will this prevent you from fully enjoying your voyage, but it may also add to any queasiness. Being on deck allows you to use the horizon as your point of equilibrium. Fresh air and keeping busy learning how to sail are also great ways to fend off sickness. Drink More and Eat Less Trying out the gourmet food served on the ship is encouraged, but you must remember not to overindulge in them. Don’t eat more than you should or last night’s dinner will certainly make 2 | P a g e

  3. an unpleasant reappearance. What you should do instead is drink more water. Dehydration can either trigger the symptoms of seasickness or make them even worse if you’re already experiencing them. Spend Some Time Ashore Making port and spending time on one of the islands is part of the itinerary. Take those opportunities to stretch your legs and get reacquainted with the wonders of walking on land. Remember to take it easy. Just as you had to get used to life on the ship, your senses will need some fine tuning getting back on the land. Having fun on the cruise is still perhaps the best remedy to motion sickness.
