Medical Card Services The Medical Card or Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) provides access to free dental treatment for adult medical card – holders, aged 16 years of age and over. A free oral examination or check-up is available every calendar year, and free emergency dental treatment for relief of pain and infection are available to all eligible patients at Sullivan Dental. This includes 2 fillings per year and all extractions. Most other treatments require prior approval from the Local Principal Dental Officer with the HSE. Approval is currently being restricted to patients with special needs, high – risk patients and those who have greater clinical needs. Children under 16 with medical cards are eligible to be seen in their local HSE Dental Clinic. PRSI Dental Entitlements If you pay PRSI contributions, you may be entitled to a free dental exam and subsidised scale & polish. The Treatment Benefit Scheme is run by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. It provides dental, optical and aural services to insured workers, the self- employed and retired people who have the required number of social insurance (PRSI) contributions. To qualify, you must have paid class A, E, P, H or S social insurance (PRSI) contributions. The amount of social insurance you need depends on your age.
