  1. Effective Assistive Technology in the Classroom By Sage Gregson

  2. Overview of Assistive Technology • Devices and services • Devices come in many forms. Simple and complex, expensive and free. • Services take steps to make devices available to a student if needed. It may also provide training, therapies, and education.

  3. Assistive Technology and the Law • IDEA requires that IEP teams consider the use of assistive technology • Sadly, there are no federal process to follow. Guidelines are followed through: • AT Organizations • State-developed manuals

  4. Hearing Impaired • A useful piece of assistive technology for the students with hearing impairments are FM Listening Systems. They cut out background noise and amplify what the teacher is saying.

  5. Seeing Impaired • Text-to-speech software will come in handy for students with visual impairments when they engage in reading. iPads and iPhones have a built in feature known as VoiceOver, which reads aloud everything on the screen.

  6. Learning Impaired • Reading guides can be effective for students who struggle to stay focused on tasks. The highlighted strip narrows down the reading material while the rest of the page is blocked out.

  7. Physically Impaired • Ring pens are useful for students who have trouble with hand mobility. The device comes with two hollow openings, one for a pen and the other for a finger. They are often cheap, and they receive good reviews.
