  1. WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON TREATMENT FOR GLAUCOMA?

  2. What is Glaucoma? • Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve and can lead to blindness if left untreated. • Glaucoma occurs when pressure inside the eye increases, damaging the optic nerve. This pressure increase may occur due to high blood pressure, diabetes, or other conditions. 2

  3. How Glaucoma can be treated? Treatment for glaucoma includes medication and surgery. Medication is used to lower the intraocular pressure. Surgery involves removing the natural material from the eye that creates the blockage. 3

  4. TYPES OF GLAUCOMA 1

  5. OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA “ • Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the fluid that fills the front chamber of the eye (the anterior chamber) begins to leak out through the drainage system into the back chamber of the eye (called the posterior chamber). • This type of glaucoma usually affects both eyes at the same time. 5

  6. CLOSED ANGLE GLAUCOMA “ • Closed-angle glaucomas occur when the fluid behind the iris does not drain properly. This type of glaucoma may affect only one eye. 6

  7. THE MOST COMMON TREATMENT FOR GLAUCOMA • The most common treatment for glaucoma is laser surgery • Laser surgery is performed by a doctor who uses a special instrument called a goniolens to remove excess fluid from the eye • There are two types of lasers used in glaucoma surgery: argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) and selective laser trabeculoplasties (SLT). ALT is less effective than SLT because it only treats the drainage angle of the eye. • In addition to laser surgery, medications are also commonly prescribed to treat glaucoma. These include beta blockers, alpha agonists, prostaglandins, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, and topical steroids. 7

  8. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS A complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image, namely making it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly. 8
