It can affect any type of vessel, but the two most common types are small-vessel vasculitis and large-vessel vasculitides. ▸ Small-vessel vasculitic disorders include Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) ▸ 2

  3. 1 SYMPTOMS OF VASCULITIS

  4. 1. Painful joints The first symptom of vasculitis is joint pain. This can occur at any time during the course of the disease but usually occurs after the onset of symptoms. Joints are swollen and tender. They may become red and warm to touch. If left untreated, they can cause permanent damage to the affected area. 2. Swelling Swelling of the skin, especially around the eyes, mouth, nose, throat, fingers, toes, ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, hips, buttocks, and neck is common. The swelling can be mild or severe. Severe swelling can lead to difficulty breathing through the nose or mouth. 3. Fever Fever is often present. It may come and go. It is not unusual for people who have vasculitis to feel cold. 4

  5. Causes of Vasculitis 1. Lupus Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of blood vessels. This can lead to damage of the skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, joints, and other organs. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain, mouth sores, and skin rashes. 2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the joints. RA symptoms may include joint stiffness, swelling, redness, warmth, and loss of function. 3. Polyarteritis Nodosa (PAN) Polyarteritis nodosa is a rare condition that causes inflammation of small arteries throughout the body. 6. TREATMENT METHODS FOR VASCULITIS 6

  7. TREATMENTS 1. Corticosteroids Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory agents that have been used to treat many autoimmune diseases. They work by suppressing the immune system’s ability to produce inflammatory cytokines. These drugs can help reduce inflammation and swelling associated with vasculitis. 2. Immunosuppressants Immunosuppressants are medications that suppress the body's immune system. They are often prescribed after organ transplantation surgery to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. However, immunosuppressants may cause side effects including increased risk of infection, cancer, and other complications. 3. Plasmapheresis Plasmapheresis is a procedure where blood plasma is removed from the patient and replaced with albumin solution. This treatment has been shown to improve symptoms of vasculitis. 7
