  • State Fund’s database indicates that about 70% of occupational injuries are ergonomic in nature (this includes back injuries)

  • Nationwide, the cost is billions of dollars a year in losses

  • Bachelor’s Degree

    • Typically in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Medicine, Public Health

    • About 1/3 of all Industrial Hygienists have earned Master’s Degrees

    • About 1/3 of all Industrial Hygienists are Certified Industrial Hygienists

    • Industrial Hygienists are responsible for occupational health, but are regularly required to address occupational safety as well as Environmental/ Community Health & Safety.

      • A DTSC Technical Senior went to private sector for a 40K/year pay increase. DTSC has been unable to fill the vacancy despite repeated rounds of advertising.

    • Safety Engineer and other State classifications

      • Less duties

      • Less responsibilities

      • More pay

      • Last IH exams resulted in 8 possible candidates statewide

    • Toxics

      • Unable to fill the Technical Senior vacancy

      • Unable to hire for an Associate IH position in Berkeley

      • Sacramento positions difficult to fill

    • Corrections and Rehabilitation

      • Unable to hire for an Associate IH position in Sacramento 3 people met the MQs out of 27 applicants
