  1. September 8, 2017 Wondering How to Keep Flowers Fresh Longer? Florists Offer Some Easy Tips for You Flowers always find a way of brightening up your day. After all, they're gorgeous to the eye, they smell nice, and they exude cheer so effortlessly. Researchers, in fact, find that flowers can help improve a person's overall well-being. According to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one study found that patients with flowers in their hospital P a g e 1 | 3

Furthermore, flowers immediately bring about happiness in general, affecting your mood positively in the long-term. For all these reasons and more, you should consider displaying flowers around your home or workspace more regularly. That said, anyone who has received or bought flowers knows it can be disappointing when you see flowers wilt away too soon. Luckily, you can apply a few easy steps to keep your flowers staying fresh for a considerable amount of time. Snip Them a Little Bit If you've just received a bouquet of flowers from someone, the first thing you need to do when you get home is give them a little snip. This is because flowers host a vascular system in their stems. This is responsible for absorbing water and nutrients in order to keep the flower fresh. When you don't trim these, air that has already been drawn into the stems while they were out of water can easily block water absorption. Use pruning shears and snip only about a half-inch off the bottom to make sure you are cutting above any possible air bubbles. Put Them in Water Right Away After you have cut the stems, you need to put the flowers in water as quickly as possible. This allows the flowers to receive the nutrients they need to stay in bloom mode. Generally, you should use room-temperature water. For flowers whose bulbs flower during cooler months, however, water below room temperature does a better job of making them last longer. P a g e 2 | 3

  3. Remove Any Foliage Below the Water You may not realize it, but any flower or plant leaves left floating in vase water will end up rotting quite quickly. This, in turn, will spread the bacteria and end up wilting your flowers sooner than expected. To avoid such, remove any foliage floating in the water immediately. Change the Water Regularly As you might expect, bacteria is the ultimate enemy of fresh flowers. To keep it out of your blooms, be sure to wash out the vase and refill it regularly. Do this every three days to be certain. At the same time, you can also trim the stems another half-inch when you change water to help keep the flowers healthy. Follow these tips and your fresh flowers should bloom to their maximum. This way, you can enjoy the beauty of your flowers a lot longer. As you can see, maintaining flowers doesn't take much time. Attend to them for a few minutes a day and you get to have them around for days to come.
