  1. The European Travel Market BTEC National Travel and Tourism

  2. Introduction • If you plan to get a job in the travel and tourism industry, knowledge of the European travel market is vital. • This lesson aims to help you develop knowledge and understanding of European countries, gateways and major destinations. • What is covered will not, in itself be sufficient to equip you fully; you will need to use it as a ‘springboard’ into learning more about Europe.

  3. What is Europe? • Sounds fairly easy, no? Well, try answering the following questions: • Where does Europe start – to the north, south, east and west? • Is Europe actually a continent? If so, does it include Russia? How about Turkey? Is the UK part of Europe? • How are these definitions work in understanding the European Union?

  4. How much do you know about the main gateways of the European Travel Market? You’ll need to know the key airports, train termini and sea ports in the market. You’ll have to find out the IATA codes for the airports. And you’ll need to research into using Eurostar services. Travel by Air, Rail and Sea

  5. What is There to Do in Europe? • Sounds a fairly complicated question! • There’s so much to do and a bewildering range of destinations to find out about. • You’ll need to learn about the main leisure destinations in the European Travel Market. • This includes coastal resorts, winter sports, the countryside, main cities and cruise areas.

  6. How Will I Find These Things Out? • By carrying out the tasks in the Activity you’ll find out: • The key factors of the market. • Why certain destinations have appeal to some parts of the market. • The main segments of the market. • Finally, you should have some understanding of the different leisure experiences available in this diverse market.
