  1. Skills and Techniques- BadmintonKC 2- Skill/technique improvement through mechanical analysis or movement analysis or consideration of quality Gathering Information/Feedback

  2. Why do you need to gather information on your badminton performance? • Identify your performance strengths and weaknesses. • Prioritise a weakness and form a plan of action. • Select appropriate methods of practice to improve your identified weakness • Identify how well you performed in defence and attack • Identify areas of the court not covered well • Identify times when your level of performance in the game was low. Reflect on this. • Provides a permanent record for you to compare future performances. (own/peers) • Measure improvements

  3. How do we gather information? We must consider what data we want to collect and then select an appropriate tool of analysis for obtaining this data. Data must be relevant Initial Data: Whole performance S and W Focused Data: Isolate/prioritise a weakness and look more closely at this weakness to obtain more detailed data

  4. Methods of collecting data There are several tools of analysis we can use to obtain information on our performance Initial Data: General observation schedules Match Analysis sheets (video) Focused Data: Focused observation schedules (video) Scattergrams Photographs

  5. KEY: Successful √ Unsuccessful X Hits Net N Out of Court O Watch the game of full court badminton and mark the appropriate symbol in the correct box. The symbol should clearly identify what the shot outcome was. Successful shots are - HS/OHC/UAC- Lands/opponents foot in tramlines DS/NS- Before service line Smash-Wins point LS- Close to service line General Observation Checklist/MAS: Identify in broad terms (whole performance) strengths and weaknesses. Video captures performance to allow checklist to be carried out. (Dartfish)

  6. Movement analysis: Overhead Clear Place a √ in the box if your partner performs the part of the skill successfully and a X if unsuccessfully. Use the video to help you mark the checklist Focused Observation Checklist: Look at specific weaknesses in techniques/actions and identify why they are weak. Checklist is of a model performance that can be compared to performer’s. Key points of technique can then be identified. Video captures performance to allow checklist to be carried out. (Dartfish)

  7. Badminton Scattergram Name ___________________ Date________ Skill/technique_________ Scattergrams: Identify patterns of accuracy and consistency. This can be used in conjunction with a Focused observation checklist to obtain data on PAR as well as consistency and accuracy.

  8. Feedback- information we receive about our performance Feedback can be received in different ways External: Visual/verbal/written Internal: Kinaesthetic (feeling)

  9. External • Verbal • Visual • Written

  10. Feedback/Data The feedback you obtain will be Quantitative: Knowledge of Results i.e. 7/10 OHC were successful Qualitative: Knowledge of Performance i.e. I successfully contacted the shuttle above my head with a straight arm

  11. Validity and ReliabilityData collected must be valid and reliable- How do we achieve this? Valid: Data obtained is relevant Appropriate tool of analysis used. Free from human error Reliable:Data must be accurate Non bias Objective data is more accurate than subjective.

  12. Practical ways of obtaining valid and reliable data Invalid or unreliable information occurs when too much information is trying to be gathered at once and human error accounts for mistakes in the data. Ways to prevent this from happening are: • Use video in conjunction with your ToA. You can rewind and pause performance situations so that no information is missed. Totally free from human error! • Use more than one observer who has previous knowledge of badminton i.e. MP or teacher. • When gaining qualitative data (subjective), try and obtain quantitative data at the same time to provide you with more reliable information.

  13. Remember! When re-testing your performance you must test under the exact same conditions. Test parameters must be identical. This will ensure all data obtained is valid and reliable.

  14. Homework Task • Prioritise a weakness in your overall performance. • Devise a focused data sheet for your prioritised weakness. You will use this ToA to obtain detailed information on your chosen skill/technique. • Complete by Thursday 1/11/07
