Brahms’ Life

  • At 13, studied piano, theory, and composition, and played dance music in cafés

  • Met the Schumanns during his first concert tour

  • Lived with Clara while Robert was in an asylum

    • Remained life long friends with Clara

  • Passed over for the conductor’s post of Philharmonic Orchestra in Hamburg

Brahms’ Life

  • Conducted a Viennese music society and introduced forgotten older works, including those of Handel, Bach, and Mozart

  • Wrote the Four Serious Songs in 1896 in memory of Clara Schumann

  • Diagnosed with cancer in 1896

  • Died at age 64, less than a month after he heard a performance of his Fourth Symphony

  • Incredibly lyrical

  • Uses contrasting rhythm patterns, syncopations, and mixed meters

    • One of his trademarks was “two on three” rhythmic patterns

  • Favored rich, dark tone colors

  • Also favored mellow instruments like the viola, clarinet, and French horn
